Fat or thin? The question is in…

February 15th, 2010

I’ve just realised I have a fashion aversion to all things chunky.

I thought it was just in my ordinary life that heavy things reigned supreme - I like my men rough and rugged and my chocolate littered with fruit and nuts. But when looking at my fashion choices of late, or in general really, I am never in an outfit that doesn’t feature a chunky item.

Shoes – Wedges or stacked heels, never a beautiful ballet flat.

Jackets – A statement trench or blazer and only with statement sized buttons.

Necklaces – I've embraced the bib necklace ever since I wore a bib for real.

Earrings – Comparatively chandeliers.

Bracelets – An item I’ve never worked, only bulky bangles for me.

Belts – The wider the better.

Rings – Knuckledusters.

Bags – If it aint got obvious hardware, I aint slinging it over my shoulder.

I am interested to hear what others think, whether you are either one or the other, or a combination of both. Someone who makes delicate fashion choices as opposed to someone with a constantly chunky closet.

Are you a dainty darling or a fashion heavyweight?

My Unplanned Hiatus Explained!

January 5th, 2010

Hello Kittens!

Happy New Year. I hope your festive season was full of laughter, love and happiness.

Now I know I've been a very naughty girl by neglecting this blog. I am sorry if you thought I had abandoned you, but, to be honest, there has been quite a lot going on in my world and you all deserve an explanation.

I've been hiding a little secret:
Belly shot
I am going to be a mamma!

At present, I am 18 weeks along. It has been a bit of a bumpy ride as this is not my first pregnancy since my wedding back in May last year, but we are now all happy and healthy and looking forward to a little bundle's arrival in early June of 2010.

So now you understand my lack of outfit posts - nothing in my vintage wardrobe quite fits anymore and alas, it may be a while til I regain some semblance of a waistline! While I have always loved the glamour of vintage, I am finding that this unfortunately didn’t extend to maternity wear styles of yesteryear!

So I put it to you, darlings - what would you like to see here on Ask Bronny, from Vintage Verve in 2010?

I don't want to bore you with baby or pregnancy related things (there are so many other wonderful blogs out there that cover these topics), unless you are interested in how I am going to try and translate my personal style around my ever-expanding…. well….. my ever-expanding everything!!

Your comments and suggestions will all be read and taken into consideration so please do leave your thoughts in the comments section of this post.

xx VV

Versace darling

December 7th, 2009

With Christmas cheer in the air, and my eyes glued to my Ebay gift Watchlist, I thought I’d drop everyone a line and let you know what I’ve been up to these past months!

Long time no post I know, but I’m not sure whether you’ll want to know why I’ve been to busy to write. Cue the violin … I’ve just come back from a styling job with the Versace hotel on the Gold Coast. Poor me.

Working back late at deadline and having to compromise editorial for advertising space does pay off when you get the occasional perk. And my recent getaway certainly was one of those perks … along with my new bottle of Marc Jacobs ‘Lola’ – believe the hype, it’s divine.

Helping launch our publishing company’s latest bridal magazine, Queensland Wedding & Bride, I was flown up to work on shoots that were taking place at two of the magazine’s largest advertising venues. The first shoot took place at the Palazzo Versace, the hotel of choice for celebrities and the glamour set, while the second took place at QDeck, a new hotel that boasts breathtaking views of the Gold Coast from its 78th floor.

Upon arrival at the Palazzo Versace, I find out that I have my own suite. Complete with spa bath ensuite, two full bathrooms, living room, study, king size bedroom, walk-in closet and private balcony, the suite was bigger than my new apartment. Of course, everything was emblazoned with the brand’s signature Medusa head motif and resort style Versace fabrics. In the words of R Zoe, “I just die!”

The bridal shoot took place on the second day. After climbing the 5 metres it took to get out of the oversized bed, I treated myself to what can only be described as the largest buffet breakfast this side of Hulk Hogan’s plate. Because as anyone whose worked on set will tell you (even a super keen intern), fashion shoots are certainly not glamorous and it was likely to be the only meal I’d eat all day!

That’s not a complaint, just a pure fashion fact of life. From obnoxious models to egotistical hair stylists to umpteen wardrobe changes and bad weather conditions, fashion shoots seem peachy from the outside but are as fun to be involved in as dental surgery. And this one didn’t disappoint.

The models were a beautiful surprise (anyone who believes a model’s Comp card is in for as rude of an awakening as having water thrown on your dial first thing in the morning), but the photographer on the other hand had a pole up his you know what. Or perhaps it should have been a spare camera, for he took so long to get the shoot done that I thought I might have to step in and take the damn frames myself! The following day called for temporary residence at the pool bar. Ten cocktails in total, enough said.

Arriving back in Melbourne, our team put together the six key bridal shoots for the January 2010 issue of Melbourne Wedding & Bride. Some of the locations we styled at included the gorgeous Tesselar tulip farm, The Spice Market, Brighton beach and a very early 3am call at the Melbourne Aquarium. You’ll have to get a copy of the mag once it hits stands – we forced an underweight model to swim with sharks, literally!

The Way We Were - Vintage Magazines

October 28th, 2009

A little while ago, I came across quite a magnificent find: an original copy of The Australian Home Journal from 1954!

I just adore real vintage magazines. They are a true snapshot of not only the fashions of the day, but of the societal attitudes and cultural norms - so fascinating!

This one edition contained so many interesting stories, articles and advertisements that I want to share with you, kittens, that I have decided to do a series of posts on the "Way we were" topic.

The magazine was also a reinforcement of the fashion cycle theory - that past era styles come back into fashion every so often and that some are always in vogue (and thus, 'classics').

For example: The shirt dress:

First seen in the 1940's the shirt dress has been a staple fashion classic ever since. Above, we see the 1954 take, including the belted waist and flared skirt, as well as a more tailored look.

Here are two examples of the modern shirt dress, from Spiegels in the US and Dorothy Perkins from the UK.

What styles do you think never go out of fashion, Kittens?

On Trend This Spring Carnival?

October 1st, 2009
Now, if you are like me, you are starting to think about this year's Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, and more to the point, studiously observing the latest trends to incorporate into your look.
One thing I have noticed is the emphasis on statement shoes and legs. Observe:
Bright red with polka dots on dark legs and Mary-Janes with bobby socks! I loved that gorgeous petti-skirt in contrasting royal blue too.
Diamante studded wedges with patterned stockings (I am still undecided about the open toes with stockings look - what do you think?)

Another fantastic example of statement pins! I just love these stockings - fishnets with roses!

More Mary-Janes with bobby socks. You can get those delicious Vivienne Westwoods here.

Creating interest in one's legs is never a bad thing Kittens!

What's your Spring trend?

Go Bananas over ‘The Zoe Report’

August 8th, 2009

When checking my email this morning I wondered if my birthday had come early this year? No, (its 1st Sept however, for those of you who wish to forward on gifts, lol) it was just a welcome email from RachelZoe.com, advising that her daily email 'The Zoe Report' was coming my way!

Buzzing with excitement, I see she'll be chatting about her current obsessions and various sample sales, although I worry her 'style' will become mainstream with the amount of fans I expect will be reading this. You can kiss goodbye to those days when your favourite vintage clothing store was well stocked, with every 12 year old Supre shopper discovering it first. (and please, no offence to Supre, I do love your store) However it is my job to spread the fashion love, so sign up now!

Brown Paper Packages & Other favorite Things

July 10th, 2009

Hello Kittens!

You know, I enjoy being a mixture of an old fashioned girl in a modern world. Don't get me wrong, I love my wireless broadband and my iPhone. I also enjoy my coffee machine and my Dyson vacuum cleaner that removes all traces of my puppy-cat's fur from my lounge room rug (but I digress). I also (as you well know) love vintage; and I'm not just talking clothing, Kittens.

Sometimes I truly believe the old fashioned way is the nicest. Case in point: Receiving pretty packages.

Last week I received some cute little pieces I had bought from LeeLoo, an online store featuring treasures from a select group of emerging Australian designers and artists. Now I must admit to being a bit of an online shop-a-holic, so I am always delighted to find a purchase that arrives in style:

I love to incorporate vintage into my everyday, which I did with this cute little coin purse and cameo necklace, all made with vintage or reclaimed materials.

Find the wedding ‘Dress of your Dreams’

July 10th, 2009

I’m currently up to my elbows in tulle. And no, I haven’t enrolled in a ballet class! As part of my new role working for Melbourne’s hottest bridal mag, Melbourne Wedding & Bride, I’m working on a bridal fashion parade as part of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week this August.

Despite not being a particularly bridal person (no inspiration scrapbook from childhood for me), it’s been quite exciting so far to work with Melbourne’s top couture bridal designers and to be involved with Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.

While I can’t see myself in a show stopping wedding dress one day, more along the lines of Carrie’s vintage suit, it’s impossible not to be in awe of the designer’s creations and appreciate the pure workmanship put into each dress. The parade will showcase divine numbers from Mariana Hardwick, Croce Colosimo Couture, Aldo Terlato Couture and Ania G Couture.

Part of my role also involves getting celebrity bums on seats. While I don’t think I’ll secure all of the guests on my dream attendance list, which includes Delta Goodrem and Brian McFadden along with Pink and Carey Hart, there will definitely be a few A-listers there to rub shoulders with. They better arrive on time, nothing frustrates me more than a late arrival particularly when it will be my job to help them find their seat in the dark!

Called ‘Dress of your Dreams’, I really hope that when brides attend they are inspired to choose a gown that’s slightly out of the box. I’ve seen enough meringue like catastrophes to last me a lifetime in recent months! Hopefully they’ll also be inspired by some of our favourite local wedding suppliers who are packing the complimentary goodie bags each guest gets with a multitude of wedding wonders.

Picking the models will be an interesting process. Booking models ordinarily can be a feat in itself, but to find a girl who can walk, look mature enough to be a bride and can manoeuvre a 50kg princess gown down the runway is another story. Hopefully the glamorous venue, The Longroom, will be enough of a distraction should they crash and fall.

If you’re a bride-to-be, love fashion or simply love the glitz and glamour of fashion parades, I’d love to see you there!

Are You a Vintage Purist, Enthusist or Fusionista?

June 26th, 2009

Hello Kittens!

Now, it has occurred to me that I am not particularly gifted in terms of wit, charm or wisdom. I wouldn't suppose that anyone might find me as fascinating as the next girl. However, one does get asked by friends and acquaintances on a regular basis for the sources and inspirations for my, shall we say…eclectic style. This is how my blog, Vintage Verve was born.

I am always drawn by the romance of yester-year, particularly the first half of the 20th Century. I love to search out treasures, with my favourite hunting ground generally being eBay and the fab little Op Shops found in and around Melbourne.

I find that when it comes to Vintage lovers, most fall into one of three camps: The Purist (who only wears or collects genuine vintage), The Enthusiast (who likes the style of vintage and wears reproductions) and The Fusionista (the blending of the two).

I believe I fall into the latter. I wear both genuine and reproduction vintage, but I love to incorporate individual pieces into modern everyday wear.

In in the multitude of same-ness fashion that we see in public and in our stores, vintage pieces (and outfits) lifts our clothes from the mundane everywhere to the creative and individuality that gives us true style.

How do you incorporate vintage into your wardrobe? Do you go all out and dress in a single era outfit or perhaps your passion is for a particular fashion item like shoes or handbags? Tell me all Kittens!

I’ll take mine long please

April 29th, 2009

You know what I’m loving about this season’s fashion for us buxom babes? Long cardigans.
Unlike their super short, “what’s the point” cousins (aka the cropped cardy), long jumpers are your friend. They are warm, can create a nice line to make you look taller…and have the added bonus of being able to hide the odd bumpy bit!
Cardigans – despite their nanna name – also make us Buxom babes look more chic and less “bulky”, thanks to the natural deep V you can create with the right buttoning combination.
But a warning – if you’re height challenged (like me at a whopping 5 ft 2 in) – then avoid the belted look favoured in most fashion mag spreads. It cuts you in half, making you look wider and shorter. Never a good look!
So where to nab yourself a few of these winter essentials? Well, I’ve noticed Country Road have some great, long woollen cardies for around $129. (A couple may even have followed me home this week). Other high street stores I’ve seen with some decent pieces include FCUK, Witchery and OJAY.
