Skull It
October 30th, 2006This weeks
column is an extra spesh treat for me! Why? Because I get to talk about my two favourite subjects - Fashion and Mexico! Have you noticed skulls and cross bones on everything lately, from tees to swimwear, jewellery to jeans? Even the super feminine rapidly emerging star, Australian designer Marnie Skillings who is usually inspired by remnants of history; that she calls "evidence left behind," and uses items such as old letters, petticoats and curtains to inspire themes of romance - not this season, Skillings (or is that now Skullings) has traded lace for skulls! We are definitely witnessing a Halloween meets Pirates of Penzance renaissance, however in the case of Skillings who fell in love with Mexico while on her Honeymoon, rather than Halloween (although many garments in the collection scream pumpkin hues) this Winter 07collection was inspired from Día de los Muertos (The Mexican Day of the Dead) although it sounds morbid, this is rather a festive occasion where Mexican families remember their dead. So the moral of my fashion story is that the ghoulies are not just for kids and don't resign the skull and cross bone to the "House of Mickey and Tweetybird couture," this trend has edge, so if you want to look sooooo hot 'right now' put a 'skull on it' or be left for dust!
