Jane's Favorite Things

Written by Jane Stabler

My wardrobe is a curious place. There are some days when I am convinced that there is a black hole in there, regularly sucking all my good stuff into oblivion and leaving behind only misery causing clothing possibilities.

I regularly stand, feeling helpless, in just underwear, in front of my racks of clothes and shoes wondering how much money I have spent on things I don’t seem to like anymore, and also pondering if calling in sick through lack of anything to wear would fly with my boss. Then other days I wish I could wear everything at once and desperately try to plan a fabulous night out which warrants wearing one of the dresses or pairs of shoes that are a bit too much for the every day.

I think every girl’s few favourite things fluctuate regularly. There are the key pieces that keep on giving season after season, but without doubt there are those new purchases that leave you wondering what on earth you wore before owned this new treasure. Then there are female phenomenons like fat days that mean the jeans were in love with yesterday, you loathe today. So currently, the below list comprises some of my favourite things. However if you ask me the same question again next week, it is very likely that this list may have changed!

1. The Fru Fru by George
This dress was an impulse purchase, and the kind of impulse purchase that keeps me living life to my credit limit. I can open my wardrobe and look at this dress and be instantly happy. I feel like a mix of Carrie from Sex and the City and a little girl in the Fru Fru, and despite it being almost impossible to find an occasion suitable for such a frock, it is one of my most favourite things.

2. Guess handbag
This is a relatively new acquisition, and manages to be a bit glam but still okay for daytime use. It dresses up an otherwise standard outfit and the fake snakeskin gives it a fun quality that says I’m not taking myself too seriously.

3. Newspaper print top by Morgan Marks
This top is one of the few that I still adore despite having owned it for over 12 months. This top can be worn several ways, can be glammed up with accessories and a skirt or black pants, or dressed down with jeans. It can be a bit of a struggle to get on at times, but the end result is always worth it.

4. Marilyn dress by Wayne Cooper
Despite having to limit my food intake and take shallow breaths in this very fitted around the waist dress, this is fabulously fun and can be worn at those occasions where the Fru Fru is just a little too much.

5. Foxy flare jeans by Guess
Guess jeans have super long legs as their regular size, and as a relatively tall girl, this is an absolute godsend for me. Plus they are a great wash with a cut that never goes out of style.

6. Shoes by Ebony
These shoes are hot! I bought these in the UK a couple of years ago, and I still think they are the bomb. The ankle strap and oversize buckle add a bit of sass to the standard black pointy shoe, or they can be worn with jeans to hide the buckle for those less risqué occasions (ie work) and still look fabulous.

7. White pleated skirt by Milano
This skirt was a bargain and I have had people do nothing but ooh and aah over it since I bought it. I have even had strangers follow me to tell me how much they like it. It’s definitely a summer skirt only and looks terrible with boots, but it moves really nicely and can be worn to work, or dressed up for a night out.

8. Denim jacket by Lisa Ho
This jacket goes with pretty much everything, and feels fabulous. I bought this jacket in a size a tad too big for me so I can get it over jumpers in winter without feeling like the Michelin Man, but it still looks great. The arms are a great length (long legs, long arms – it can be a pain) but the base of the jacket still sits above my hips. I love it!

9. Black satin tie top by Morgan
This top was actually bought for me by my Nanna in England. Bless her heart, this top is awesome! It ties at the neck and can be worn even on the fattest of fat days as it’s not at all fitted and I get nothing but compliments when I have this on. This top with jeans and my Ebony shoes can be worn to work with a jacket and then straight out to a bar after 5. Perfect!

10. Chance by Chanel
I think that a signature scent can be a girl’s best accessory, and mine is Chance by Chanel. I can’t leave the house without it, and its great for day or night. Plus the packaging is pink. What more could a girl want!
