Festive Fashion

Written by Jane Stabler
The silly season enables you to go a tad OTT without raising the eyebrows that you would at your uncle’s 40th. Here's how to toe the mistletoe line.

Festive fashion is all about fun, glitz and glamour, and making the most of your ability to go to town with your party frocks. But be warned! Festive fashion presents its own unique dilemmas.

The party season means there are more opportunities to dress up than usual throughout the year and what better time to look festive is there than your best friend’s Christmas party or your family trip to the Nutcracker? But there are those festive occasions where it’s not clear how dressed up you can get before people start pointing and laughing. AskBronny has pulled together some of the more common festive fashion dilemmas and how to deal with them, so you can make the most of your silly season this year!

Fashion Dilemma #1: What’s the dress code again?
Everyone has trouble determining what is required of some dress codes. How formal does formal really mean? Can you wear a dress over your favourite jeans and still fit the cocktail category?

Fashion Solution: When you’re unsure of how dressy you can actually go, but really do want to be a bit fabulous, your best bet is to glam up with the outfit but choose more casual accessories. For example, team a fab dress with flats instead of heels, or add a cardigan style tie top or bolero rather than a glitzy wrap. Today’s fashions tends to mean that no matter how explicit the dress code at whatever event you are attending, you'll probably see people decked out in everything from ball gowns to blue jeans. If you dress to make yourself happy and your outfit makes you feel stylish but comfortable, you’ll be able to rock any party!

Fashion Dilemma #2: Dealing with the function that starts straight after work.
Many of us are cursed with having to attend a fabulous Christmas function either during, or straight after work hours, but due to work interfering we find ourselves unable to dress up to the extent we would like. You don’t want to look like you are ready to hit the town when you arrive at work at 8.30am. But you also don’t want to show up to the party looking like you should be back at the office. What a dilemma!

Fashion Solution: The easiest way to solve such a drama is with accessories. An all black outfit is a good start, and a fitted black top with a pair of trendy black dress shorts is a good place to start. When you are ready to hit the par-tay, pull out the clutch you have stashed in your work bag, and trade in your sensible work shoes for the great pair of stilettos or dressy flats you had the foresight to bring along in the morning. Fabulous accessories such as chandelier style earrings are also easy to pack into your bag in the morning so they can be donned at the last minute.

Fashion Dilemma #3: Blingle Bells!
The most common fashion no-no’s that we see around holiday time are wearing too much bling, and showing too much skin. As detailed in Ba Da Bling!, a bit of well chosen sparkle can do wonders for your outfit, and your street cred. But lighting yourself up like a Christmas tree spells fashion disaster.

Fashion Solution: Your safest bet is to light up the room with great accessories, and a bit of metallic shimmer here and there (such as fabulous silver shoes) rather than going all out in the glitz. And remember the golden rule – anywhere there is bling, you will get attention, so don’t wrap a larger than usual holiday butt in a crazy silver skirt if you don’t want people checking out your caboose!

Fashion Dilemma #4: Don’t Be A Ho Ho Ho!
The other common faux pas that we see everywhere during festivities is too much skin. Even if you have a killer body, chances are people are going to realize it without having to cop an eyeful every time you move. And for the mere mortals amongst us, most of the barely there fashions are virtually impossible to carry off, at least not without several rolls of Hollywood tape, a few cocktails and regular wardrobe adjustments to avoid Christmas surprises for the colleagues.

Fashion Solution: More than any other time during the year, the festive season is a time to be pretty and glamorous without having to be overtly sexy to do so. Leaving something to the imagination is often the best way to look gorgeous, and the suggestion of your best bits is often hotter than just blatantly getting them out there. A halter dress or top shows off a killer back and great arms, a skirt with a slit provides glimpses of your great legs, and a camisole top or a not too low v-cut top suggests your fabulous cleavage is lurking beneath.

The holiday season is all about fun, and the way you dress at this time should be too. There are parties galore, great opportunities to wear your best frock, your sexiest dress, or your favourite accessories.  And if you follow AskBronny’s festive fashion tips, you wont end up looking like the turkey!
