Tracksuits out of the house, lingerie passing as clubbing gear? Since when did it become okay to wear your clothes reserved for home outside the house?
Inside clothes have started venturing outside of the house. You know the clothes I mean, the laying around the house, the not venturing into general public land clothes. Clothes like the tracksuit and the Ugg Boot. But what is making people think this is fashion to be followed? Inside clothes outside are so not okay. When inside fashion ventures outside for the first time, it is usually the responsibility of a celebrity. Like Pamela Anderson and the Ugg boot shenanigans she started about a year ago. And J-Lo and her velour tracksuits. She was getting about in them for months. And even if she did manage to pull it off, we have to remember that she is very famous, has a very famous booty, and can get away with things we cannot. These “style icons” (forgive me for giggling) are among the reasons that such trends take off. And even those of us full of scorn for such ridiculous trends (ie me) have to admit that Eva Longoria’s character in Desperate Housewives could have made it plausible for most women to think trotting about in a snug pink tracksuit is okay. Well, considering most of us don’t look like Eva Longoria, or live in a make believe street, it’s probably not a wise fashion move to follow. Its one thing to look cute in a furry twin set if you are spending a Sunday in front of the TV with your girlfriends, and you can even run into the video store looking adorably stay-at-home, but venture further than 500m from your front door, and I hope the little fashionista inside your head starts asking you some serious questions. Another example of the inside out fashion is more literal. I have a friend who wears underwear as outerwear. She does usually restrict this activity to night time outings, which I guess makes it a little better, but it still confuses the hell out of me. She tends to opt for sexy camisoles that are purchased from the lingerie department of David Jones rather than donning what would be considered more traditional night time attire. And considering how many skimpy tops are available if you do want to bare it all, relying on lingerie surprises me. She will occasionally get a funny look from a female in a bar, and I cant help but wonder if it’s because that other female has the same cami, and she wears it with the matching knickers, but under her clothes, where it belongs. Don’t get me wrong, cami’s can work, and they did on Sex and the City, but you should go for vintage appeal, not the brand new lace and bright blue spandex! If you do insist on showing off your inside clothes, make sure you take note of AskBronny’s handy hints so you don’t become a fashion tragedy! 1. Layer! There is no denying that our inside clothes are often more comfortable than most of our outside fashion. But despite the temptation to wear them out of the house, and the fact that Madonna may have made you think it was okay in her 80s heyday, it’s best to leave the ‘at home’ look for at home. And if you feel the temptation growing inside you, stop for a second and ask yourself, do you really want to be that girl that makes people ask “she came out dressed like THAT?!” |
