Goodbye Mini

Written by Michaela Skilney
'Winter, spring, summer or fall. All have to wear is shorts' that is how that Carol King song went right? Maybe not, but we reckon they are pretty hot, here's why you need a pair!

Or at least it should! Here at AskBronny we all agree that shorts are the latest must-have fashion item you need in your wardrobe all year round. Want an answer to the mini skirt? Shorts are definitely a cool option for any time of year, definitely still a sexy head turner, but definitely a much more fashionable and ladylike choice!

You’d have to have been hiding under a rock for the last few years or so to have not noticed the influx of mini’s in women’s closets over the warmer months. Mini skirts are no longer a memory of the 60’s but instead an annoying and constant reminder in our lives that we need to tan and shave our legs every summer.

I have never been a fan of the mini. Mainly because I don’t exactly have legs that warrant that amount of attention, but also because I believe any piece of clothing that could potentially expose your private’s to the world as you walk up stairs can hardly be very ladylike.

Now that the weather is warm you are probably asking, “What do you wear on those balmy nights?” To look both sexy, classy and to attract the opposite sex for all the right reasons, the answer to this most puzzling question is to wear shorts.

“Shorts!” I hear you exclaim. “Shouldn’t they be left for the bike track?”. Trust me until a few weeks ago I too would have laughed at the idea that shorts could possibly be sexy, but an incident involving a pole and a few girlfriends made me have to go searching for a pair and to my amazement, I was pleasantly surprised.

My girlfriends and I recently decided to jump on the celebrity bandwagon and take up pole dancing classes (for exercise purposes I ensure you!) The thought of going shopping for a pair of shorts to dance in utterly disturbed me.

You see shorts had always conjured up bad memories for me. The terribly daggy navy blue ones I had to wear in primary school, my beloved frayed denim shorts that I now cringe at in old photographs, the matching sunflower shorts my parents made my sister and I wear when I was 10…Let’s just say that I have never quite had a good “shorts” experience.

With baited breathe my girlfriends and I went on a shopping expedition with the expectation that we would either come home empty handed or at the other nasty extreme, leave with a pair of fluorescent bike shorts. But from the moment I went out into the wide world of retail I soon discovered just how much this fashion faux par from my childhood days had transformed into a fashion must-have.

Australia’s hottest designers from Sass and Bide, Wayne Cooper and Nicola Finetti to Fashion Assassin, Alice Mc Call and Hussy, have all ditched the notorious mini in favour of designing shorts. Open up any fashion magazine and no doubt about there will be an entire features section devoted to them and how they are the hottest item on shopping racks for years.

The great thing about shorts is that you can take them from the summer months right through to the cooler nights with a few added accessories. Just last weekend I was set on wearing my funky new tweed pair with cuffs and gold piped pockets for a night out with the girls when the weather suddenly turned sour. All I did was wear some brown opaque stockings underneath, my black knee high pointy boots over the top and I was set to go…when you just have to show off your new wardrobe addition there’s always a way!!!

From not wanting to look at a pair ever again in my life, I have become so addicted to this new trend that I bought seven different pairs of which only one will be used for the classes. I’ve discovered just how silly we have all been to dismiss shorts as nothing more then exercise wear when in actual fact they could be a girl’s new best friend.

They can be longer then a mini to therefore hide all your unwanted bits. They often have pockets at the back to disguise the size of your derriere. They cover you up so you never have to fear a Paris Hilton “Oops-I-forgot-to-put-on-underwear-this-morning!” scandal. And to top it off you are still showing your sexy legs to the opposite sex without looking like you’re good for a one night stand. What more could you ask for ladies?

But before you all go out and by yourself a pair on my advice, here are a few pieces of fashion advice to which you must abide:

1. Tailored all the way
Forget the comfortably baggy drawstring variety of the past with side pockets and go for a gorgeously tailored pair with this season’s rolled cuff hem, less length to them and a zipper fly.

2. Great Colors
Forget the dull shades they used to multiply in and instead opt for this season’s brightest hues of watermelon, lemon yellow, jewel blue or the ever classy and safe silver greys or black.

3. Wear them like a mini
Lose your inhibition about the ‘cool factor’ of shorts and wear them just as you would a mini. Casually on the weekend teamed with a funky tank and flip-flops or dressy at night teamed with high heels, a sequined singlet and an evening clutch.

4.  Shorts No Go Zone
Please, no hotpants! Hotpants are definitely not shorts. They are barely an extension on the underpant and should be left only for Studio 54 gals and real pole dancers!

So there you have it the long and the short of it! If you haven’t already, run out and get yourself into a pair of shorts. But don’t run literally…then you would need some of those daggy bike shorts!
