Bathers for a long torso

Written by Sacha Miller-Mcdonald
Dear Bronny

I have a real problem. I am not a big girl, and I am the absolute opposite to buxom. However... I am tall, and I have a tummy with stretch marks compliments of my daughter. I do not particularly want to spray my stomach with tan, and nor do I want to spend hours on sit ups. I would like to be able to find a one piece swimsuit that doesn't look like old lady, or athlete.

AND I don't know what is with the cut out togs. I am not really that into those. Fussy I know, but I saw in many magazines just recently that the one piece is available, but I can't seem to find any around that are long enough. I tried on some made by one teaspoon, and I might as well have been topless! No problem if you are as stumped as I am, just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thank you
Kara

Dear Kara

Purchasing a bathing suit certainly can be a drama for girls of any shape or size.  Post pregnancy can be especially disconcerting as you gradually become more comfortable with your body again and the changes that have occurred such as the stretch marks you mention.  Whilst the stretch marks will gradually fade in time, it is a suitable bathing suit you are after for now!  As such, here are my tips for follow when looking:

- halter neck for adjusting the length of the bathing suit
- one piece with a lower cut leg to draw attention away from the waist
- patterns to disguise a bit of a belly and cover stretchmarks
- a two piece tankini, which also disguises a bit of a belly
- darker colors such as chocolate or black in a one piece

When looking online keep in mind that most models have long legs and torso’s as well, so the girls you see in the pictures should be a good indication.

As you mention the cutout suits are hot at the moment. Whilst they look sexy on the catwalk and in magazines, I think a lot of girls are going to get a surprise with the post tan lines they'll endure when the bathers are no longer needed. I'd avoid this fad bathing suit trend.

SwimwearBoutique.com have a great selection for you to browse, how about this one piece, it’s called the Dr No and we can see why, it is very James Bond’esque and I think looks great. It has a tie at the back so whilst it is still a one piece, it keeps a little bit of the new trend with the bit at the back. The leg isn’t too high and the halter on it will allow you to adjust the upper half to suit your body shape.

Here’s another one that I think is really sexy that again has a halter neck which allows for some flexibility as to how far it comes up. The gorgeous pattern in it is very seventies and I think this would look equally fabulous with a sarong or Kaftan.

There are heaps more bathers at SwimwearBoutique, but keep in mind that you need flexibility with your suit.  An adjustable halter neck allows you to decide how far the swimsuit should ride up or down.  A one piece will allow you to cover your stretch marks. Adding a bit of a pattern to the bather will actually disguise your bit of a belly whilst a tankini can offer the looser nature of the top half to again disguise any bits you're not keen on whilst keeping flexibility with length.

The other alternative would be a strapless one piece, however with a baby this might prove a bit impractical with little grabbing hands!

How cute is this tankini from ExquisiteSwimwear.com!

Here are some more shops to have a look at online:

Swimwearboutique.com
Zodee.com.au
Exquisiteswimwear.com
InStyleSwimwear.com

Last but not least – here is a site I have found that actually caters specifically for women with longer torsos, see what you think of these ones!

With these tips in mind, good luck for your fun in the sun and don’t forget to always wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the harsh rays of the sun.

Love
Bronny
