Flattering Hairdo

Written by Bronny
Hi Bronny!

I'm so sick of my hair. It's so hard to work with, so mostly I just put it into a ponytail - but after a while that gets really boring, right? :)

So I'm desperate for a new, cool hairdo that isn't too much work. My face is kind of long, big forehead.

What kind of hairdo would flatter me?

Best regards,
Lizzie from Denmark.
ANSWER

Dear Lizzie,

Hair – it can truly be a nightmare!  I remember when I was travelling and didn’t get my hair cut for 12 months – it was out of control and the only hairdo I seemed to be able to manage was either in a twist on top of my head or out - so I can sympathise with you!

My first advice is to get a good hairdresser that you can work with. They will suggest styles that work for you whilst giving further information on how to style your hair.

Before you head off to the hairdresser however, it’s a good idea to figure out the shape of your face and then think about some styles that you would like that are also low maintenance.

Here’s how to figure out the shape:

Get the tape measure and write down each of these measurements:
1. the width of your face across the top of your cheekbones
2. the width across your jaw line from the widest point to the widest point
3. the width across your forehead at the widest point
4. and finally, measure from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your chin

Then you can decide which of the following face shapes you are:

Face Shapes
Oval: the length of your face is equal to one and a half times width
Round: your face is as wide as it is long (this may vary a little but generally the measurements are fairly close)
Oblong: your face is longer than it is wide
Heart: your face is narrow at jaw line and wider at cheekbones / and or forehead.
Square: your face is about as wide as it is long, with your hairline being quite straight
Diamond: your face is widest at cheekbones with a narrow forehead and jaw line of approximately equal widths

Now look at the measurements and you can decide what shape you are. From what you have said you sound like you might be an Oblong shape, however the measurements will tell you exactly which one you are.

If you are indeed an oblong shaped face then you might like to try short to medium lengths which can also be low maintenance. Try to keep your hair fuller on the sides to balance out your forehead. Wispy bangs can also look good as does creating a side part or a thicker side part that has a fringe. Also, you might like to try layering your hair, then when you wake up in the morning, put some mousse on your hands, tip your head over, run it through then fluff up your hair and you’re out the door!

Definitely avoid having really long hair as this will just drag your face down, you might like to stick to around shoulder length hair.

Celebs with this shape face include Gwyneth Paltrow, Kirstie Alley, Niki Taylor and Stephanie Seymour. So you might like to see what they do with their hair for some ideas.

And finally another good hairstyle site is stellure.com, they actually offer a product where you can put your face into the hairstyles – amazing !!  But you do have to subscribe to get this.

Good luck and remember to compliment your new hairstyle with an amazing outfit.
