Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot were all beautiful, stylish stars of the fifties. Ask Bronny travels through the fashion timeline again.
When you may think of the 50s images of rock and roll, big skirts and leather jackets. However, the 50s spawned an era in fashion that has embedded itself in fashion’s wardrobe of fame. Femininity was big in the 50s – yes, it was all about girl power! Hair was short and neat and make up was simple yet ever so sexy – liquid eyeliner on the top brow followed by thick, luxurious false eyelashes and luscious red lips.
As far as couture, A-line, clenched waist and strapless dresses were in vogue. The ladies of the 50s were wearing button up shirts, off-the-shoulder jumpers with Capri pants, full circle skirts and rolled up jeans. Stilettos and ballerina flats were on everybody’s feet!
Now the 50s wouldn’t have been the same had these next four women not existed.

Marilyn Monroe Elton John’s famous line ‘goodbye Norma Jean’ in itself is poignant because Norma Jean, aka Marilyn Monroe is still missed and emulated amongst fashionsitas. The blonde, who made the hourglass figure fashionable was known for wearing figure hugging gowns that showed off her perfect body. Marilyn’s hair and make up is still considered ever so sexy and can be seen on people like Gwen Stefani and of course the early Madonna living in her Material World!

Her style was simple – making sure it fit right whilst accentuating all her assets! Her wardrobe consisted of spaghetti strap dresses, tights tops with waist belts and high stilettos! Her make up – thick jet black liquid eyeliner and her high arched eyebrows made it easy for everybody to recognize the Italian Oscar winner.
Audrey Hepburn Famous for inventing ‘the little black dress’, Audrey Hepburn’s style was elegant and sophisticated. She wore fitted suits and Capri pants with flat shoes and fitted tops with waist belts. Audrey always insisted that her style was something all women could attain – and that’s what we women have done! Even women on 2007 aspire to look like Audrey – think Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchette. And of course she is one of AskBronny’s favorite Style Icons!
