Dear Bronny, I'm inspiring to become a fashion stylist I was wondering if you could answer some few questions like. What do you need in order to become one? Skills? Education? How is salary like? Who do you work with? What is your average day like? Thank you Martha Segovia ANSWER Dear Martha How exciting, being a stylist is a really fun job – especially if you love clothes and fashion. So, I think the best way to help you is just answer each of your questions straight up. Here goes! What do you need in order to become one? Firstly to become a Stylist you need to be interested in fashion, I would go so far as to say you have to love fashion and have a great eye for what’s look good on different body types, skin coloring etc. So begin with you have to have the interest and desire. Skills & Education? As for skills, you’d be surprised to know that a lot of famous fashion stylists actually don’t have specific qualifications such as Rachel Zoe who actually worked for a magazine and then freelanced into becoming a stylist and is now one of the best know stylists around. You actually don’t need a degree to become a stylist, but it does help to have a good knowledge of fashion, history of fashion and the fashion industry, as such any kind of fashion course is a good idea just to understand fabrics etc. How is the salary? Well this really depends on how successful you are. At the beginning of course you can’t expect to make buckets but when you get to the top of your game stylists at something like the Oscars command thousands and of course get heaps of freebies from design houses on top of that. Who do you work with? Again this depends on the level you are at. You could work with everyday people or at the very top end. You need to decide which part of the market you would like to work with and take it from there. For me I wanted to help the everyday gal which is why I started AskBronny. What is your average day like? For me because I’m an online Stylist my day is full of answering questions and being ensconced in fashion. When you are on the street so to speak your day is full of clothes, designers, working with the people you are styling and of course creating wonderful looks. I hope this info helps and good luck!
