70s Style Icons |

We’re living in the 70s! A time in fashion that will simply be indelible. The bright colours, the unforgettable music and who could forget disco dancing!
Yes, the 70s were all about being happy and being free. As far as fashion was concerned, a lot of what had been designed in the decades before was being re-styled, re-vamped and re-used. Stylish icons included Cher, Farrah Fawcett, Bianca Jagger and Anjelica Huston. In the early 70s, the peasant look was introduced thanks to Yves St Laurent and later on, the punk look was born thanks to British designer, Vivienne Westwood (think Gwen Stefani in her film clip for ‘rich girl’). Women were again wearing baby-doll dresses, pant dresses and wrap dresses. HINT: wrap dresses with prints are great to wear if you want to conceal a jelly belly or, if you have killer curves, wrap dresses let you show off your womanly shape!) Tank tops and short shorts were a highlight and this look is still in style. Just take a look at Miss Kate Moss – never seen with out her short shorts. Peasant and corduroy skirts were around as well as knee high socks – as seen being worn by Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas in 2005/2006. Aren’t you grateful for all the shiny, eye-catching beads and necklaces you can find at markets? Well thank the 70s because they were in vogue. Belt buckles, chain belts and mood rings and anklets were also fashionable jewelry. Women were wearing knee high and thigh high boots! Sandals and clogs (remember them? They made a forgettable comeback in the early 90s and are currently plodding around in the form of crocs which AskBronny thinks should only appear on children!). As well as tie dye which should definitely never be seen again! Hair was long and natural and women chose to wear nude and natural make up. Glittery eyeshadow and bold, long a acrylic fingernails became widely popular – think Sharon Stone in Casino. In essence, the 70s was about looking and feeling natural with nature, love beads influencing much of what was a la mode. On the other hand, there was decadence and glamour. Each decade in fashion wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t have style icons we could look up to. The 70s can be remembered for spawning icons like Cher, Farah and Bianca. Cher One of the most famous women ever: without a surname. Cher was (and still is) a fashion icon. Her long, straight, jet black hair set trends and her outrageous and flamboyant costumes, many covered in sequins and rhinestones (designed by Bon Mackie) showcased Cher’s positive and exuberant look on life. Cher’s long eyelashes and distinctive make up were thanks to make up artist, Leonard Engelman. Farrah Fawcett Famous for her long golden locks (hint: to achieve her look, use a straightening iron and twist strands of hair around it anti-clockwise down the side of your face) and killer body, this former ‘Charlie’s Angel’ was the face of Wella Balsam hair products and made flared trousers a hit! Farrah also used Vaseline on her eyelashes to keep them shiny. Who could ever forget that famous shot of Farah with her red swum suit on? To this day, it is still considered one of the most famous pin ups ever! And Baywatch lovers can thank Farah for that red swim suit which brought us Pammy, Yasmeen and many more of those red one piece clad gals. Bianca Jagger Bianca Jagger became known to the world after marrying legendary rocker Mick Jagger. (They have since divorced). In the 70s, Bianca was know for her partying ways and being an ‘it’ girl thanks to her adventures at Studio 54: the Manhattan club that was all about sex, drugs and disco music! (HINT: rent the movie 54 which starred Ryan Phillippe to get an all round sense of the happenings that was once Studio 54). Despite Bianca being an all round party girl in the 70s, she was also an advocate for human rights and injustices after venturing to Nicaragua and seeing the plight of its people during a visit in the late 70s. When you think of Bianca in the 70s, think of slinky long dresses with a plunging navel, wide brimmed hats and white pants suits. Angelica Huston Hollywood royalty and fantastic actress, Angelica Huston seems to have staying power certainly as a Style Icon. She emerged in the late sixties as a model with completely different looks to the girls of the day. Her sultry dark haired statuesque looks stood her apart from the crowd and she landed covers from the age of 17. With her moody look she was a fashion dahling and soon became a style icon with perhaps her most gorgeous accessory being Jack Nicholson for sixteen years. Huston to emphasise those enormous gorgeous eyes favored a sultry charcoal look. She wore flowing materials and simply gorgeous in her cat like stylishness. The 70s were a priceless era in fashion; it introduced women who are still fashion icons and created couture that we still see in department stores today. Yes, the 70s were truly a decade of fashion do's! At the same time, the 70s were revolutionary in the sense that most clothing was influenced by the disco craze (this later died out in 1980). It’s no wonder we all wanted to live in the 70s! |
