90s Style Icons

Written by Stephanie Mariani
MsMossThe 90s spawned the supermodel: Linda, Cindy, Christy and Naomi were the 'it' girls of the 90s and everyone wanted to be just like them! Plus they were real women with curves!
They graced the covers of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, The Face, Rolling Stone, Time … the list goes on.  Supermodels were ubiquitous in the 90s, however fashion in itself  produced many styles, in particular the 'grunge'  and 'heroin chic' looks.

In the early 90s, the grunge look became very popular amongst people, in particular teens. The look included wearing plain flannel shirts, stonewash jeans and Doc Martins. Adopting this somber style was characterized by the rise of grunge music, predominantly associated with the bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Hair was long and often unwashed and clothing and shoes were dark. Heroin chic, on the other hand, was developed in 1993 thanks to Kate Moss's very famous Calvin Klein underwear ad campaign.  The look can be defined by pale skin and dark circles under the eyes. The look was severely criticized by anti-drug groups for glorifying drug use; however, as with many fashion trends, it soon faded.

Nevertheless, people were loving stonewashed jeans, and spandex! Yes, spandex was a hit in the 90s. Beach culture and surfing was also popular in the 90s and coral colours like blue, yellow, turquoise, pink and green were in style.

Hideous parachute pants (which, I might add, should never, never be revived!) and scrunchies were fashionable as well as denim overalls (which have made a comeback) and white demin. Platform shoes made a comeback thanks the Spice Girls and Jennifer Aniston's famous hairstyle from her early days on Friends was also very popular amongst women. Flared jeans and bumbags were stylish as well as over-the knee stockings with mini skirts and pinafores. Wide legged cargos were seen on almost everyone and baggy jeans were a hit.  Levi's 501s,  Levi's denim jackets, wais coats, high waisted jeans and belly revealing tops were also super popular.

Stylish icons of the 90s did include the 'trinity' of supermodels – Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista. They began the supermodel mania that existed during the 90s. This trinity pushed for better wages, conditions and opportunities for supermodels. All three appeared in George Michael’s "Freedom" video clip and helped start the revolution of the supermodel.

Naomi Campbell
(check out how young she looks in the Freedom video above)
When you hear her name, you think of mobile phones, maids and community service! Ouch, this beauty was the first black woman to pose for French Vogue and since then has appeared on Vogue more than 50 times! Although she's never shy from controversy, the model did have a tumble in 1994 during Vivienne Westwood's Angloman fashion show. Despite being best known for her bitch fights (particularly with  Victoria Beckham and Tyra Banks) and tantrums, Naomi Campbell is still a fashion icon.

Christy Turlington
Often considered the most beautiful of the three, she was discovered in central park at the age of 15 riding her horse. She's married to hunky actor Ed Burns and in the 90s had a prolific career with jobs including being the face of Calvin Klein Fragrances and the first Maybelline cover girl. She appeared in many films abut models and the modeling world and still models for Maybelline today.  She is also very into healthy living and is a the spokesperson for Centre for Disease Control and American Cancer Society after sadly losing her own father to lungh cancer. She is also an avid follower of yoga and has made several yoga DVDs whilst having her own yoga clothing range. Check out her anti smoking campaign here.

Linda Evangelista
Most famous for the phrase 'i don't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day', she was also during the 90s known as 'the chameleon' for her constant hair styles and ability to adapt in front of the camera, Linda Evangelista was, and still is a fashion icon herself. She appeared on many magazine covers and graced hundreds of runways. Linda was well respected by her peers and designers and won numerous awards during the 90s for her achievements, including a lifetime achievement award from the 1996 VH1 Fashion awards. Famous for  her one liners, this beauty captured what the 'trinity' were all about: "we don't vogue. We are vogue." She is currently pregnant with her 2nd child.

Other models in this era included Cindy Crawford, Elle McPherson, Nikki Taylor, Kate Moss, Yasmin LeBon and Claudia Schiffer. Although it seemed the supermodel frenzy would last forever, sadly it didn't. The decline of the supermodel saw more actresses and singers grace the covers of magazines but thanks to active models like Tyra Banks, supermodels are starting to make a comeback.

The 90s were a memorable time in fashion's archive and AskBronny is thankful for the impact models and fashion had - if for anything in giving us the gorgeous Kate Moss. Stay tuned next time for style icons – 00s.

PS. Check the girls curves, this was pre size 0 mania. Girls may have been thin, but they were still healthy!
