Wearing clothes the second time around is oh so fashionable. But how to get the right threads - and the best? We reveal all.
There are some things that many of us will not buy knowing that someone else has been around the block in it. Underwear and shoes are at the top of my list for example, although bidding for Kylie Minogue’s gold knickers is obviously a different story. But for the most part, second hand shopping can result in some fabulous finds at fabulous prices. The popularity of sites like ebay and monster marketplace are a testament to the fact that most of us seem happy to shop in other people’s wardrobes. The rise and rise of vintage has made it okay for the snootiest amongst us to scour second hand stores and there is nothing quite like the elation of finding a classic designer piece at a fraction of the price. Op shopping has become a bit of a fashion fad, and being able to respond "at an op shop" when asked where you found the fabulous dress you have on gives you a street fashion edge. Not to mention you most likely supported a charity in the mean time. But be warned, second hand shopping is not as easy as rocking up to your nearest Saint Vinnies and rolling away with a truckload of $3 Dior gowns. Finding true fashion and vintage pieces requires a bit of know how. Luckily, Ask Bronny is here to help! Here are Ask Bronny’s top three op shopping tips 1. Head outside of the city! Those city folk are not silly enough to leave the designer throw aways in the Good Sammy’s for long. Op shops are trawled by second hand boutiques, stylists and wanna be models/actors who are probably a lot more dedicated to the cause than us busy career girls who probably spend most of our time in David Jones. Unless you are scouring the designer second hand stores who have already done the dirty work for you, make your op shop a road trip and head out of town. Country folk seem to have less demand on the designer pieces that do end up in their second hand stores and you’ll be amazed at what you find sitting unloved in a store a little bit further out of town. 2. Be sensible! After regularly spending hundreds on nice jeans, a new top or a fab pair of shoes, the sight of $10, $5 and $2 racks can be a little overwhelming. Just because its $2 doesn’t mean it’s a good deal. Still only opt for pieces you will actually wear. After all, if you end up with a mountain of $2 clothes that you end up giving back to charity, you might as well have put those coins towards your next pair of Guess jeans instead. 3. Take a friend. After hours of looking at vintage gear, you can easily start to confuse paisley and plaid for a stylishly cheap ensemble. Some second hand stores are like stepping into a time warp and it’s good to have an honest friend who can remind you that it isn’t actually 1972 outside of the store. We at Ask Bronny love nothing more than vintage that is actually vintage. Second hand stores give you fashion that stands the test of time, and costs half the price. It also gives you credibility and if you’re shopping at the Good Sammy’s, a warm fuzzy feeling. So anyone that tells you shopping isn’t good for you obviously hasn’t experienced the joy of the op shop! |
