Style City Perth

Written by Jane Stabler
Perth isn't just reknowned for it's beaches, sun and surf! It also has the most fabulous shopping experience on offer, as our resident Perth girl Jane tells AskBronny.

Perth may be the most isolated capital city in the world, but it has recently started to gain a reputation for being more than just hard to get to. The not so glamorous thing we’re famous for is obviously the resources boom and the incredible economic growth of the west. The glamorous thing that is putting Perth on maps belonging to fashion’s who’s who is the beautiful people that this place seems to spawn. Think Megan Gale and Gemma Ward for example. And where you find beautiful people, you find beautiful clothes.

Shopping in Perth can be a bit confusing if you have no idea where you’re going. Being such a large slab of the country means that we’ve taken the liberty of spreading ourselves out a bit, and getting from one great shopping spot to another can be difficult without a car. That said, once you find yourself in some of these great oases of spending opportunities, you can easily spend a full day shopping without needing to go anywhere else. Except possibly a financial advisor.

First on the list is the city, or more specifically King Street and the west end of Murray Street.

King Street is our own tiny piece of Europe. A narrow, paved one way street, King Street is a gathering place for the beautiful people. The wealthy are also very welcome, with King Street housing brand essentials such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Kookai lives here too, and if you get tired of trying on the squillions of shoes in Zomp, you can always stop for a bit culture in the forms of the King Street Arts Centre and Greenhill Galleries. Varga Girl is a shopping favourite for many locals, and is also sought out by interstate visitors for its unique style and great stock of local designers. King Street also offers great coffee at Cino to Go, great food and cake at the King Street Café, and great beer at the Belgian Beer Café on the corner.

The Belgian could be argued to be on Murray Street, which is the west end of city, and which also provides great shopping opportunities. Whether you are headed to King Street, or back into town, you will pass fabulous stores like Miin and Eldorado which offer great brands and in the case of Miin, local designs and locally made clothes. It is easy to lose a fair bit of time in Miin and their fabulous fabrics and cuts can easily result in spending more than you intended.

Not far from the city is the suburb of Subiaco, also a gathering place for the fabulous. Subiaco also offers a great nightlife, so if you dress to last from day to night and can find somewhere to stash your shopping bags, it is worth kicking on here. You can find virtually anything you want in Subi, from stylish homewares, to your groceries, to your next formal gown. Hay Street and Rokeby Road are the two essentials if you want funky additions to your wardrobe, and when you are about to collapse head to the Subi Hotel on the corner for a cocktail. If you’re there on a Friday or Saturday afternoon, watch the suits and the beautiful people start to float in. Chances are when you’re in Subi, you’ll even see a “perthonality”.

If you’ve got the time, make your way down the coast to Claremont, which although small, is a good place to stop. Claremont is home to a lot of old money and a lot of the stores reflect this. There are some great little boutiques, and bigger names like Wayne Cooper also call this home. Keep heading down the coast to Fremantle if you need to satisfy the boho in you. Fremantle has a style all of its own, and if your inner hippie is desperately trying to get out, let her out here. The Fremantle Markets are a tourist attraction in themselves, and sell essentially everything. Don’t confuse the Freo Markets for the likes of Paddington Markets, but it is possible to pick up some great accessories and you can even have a t-shirt printed up to your specifications. Here, copyright does not seem to apply, so come equipped with your favourite designer’s logo!

If outdoor shopping doesn’t do it for you, there are a few malls that are worth the parking hassle. The two most worthy of mention are Garden City and Karrinyup. Garden City is in a bit of a random place that’s sort of south and sort of inland, and the best way to get there is by car. It’s worth the trip, and even the gardens and water features that break up the escalator trip from the car park are nice to look at. Great stores like Oroton and D’Cjuba sit alongside retail giants David Jones and Myer, but it’s unlikely that you’ll find any local designers or unique stores here.
Karrinyup is in the opposite direction, north of the city. Parking at Karrinyup is regularly a disaster, but it is nice once you finally get inside and it’s a difficult place to leave empty handed.

One final place worth heading to if you really want local style is a place called Design Edge at a small southern centre called Belmont Forum. This store has been established to showcase the talents of local designers, and what you find here is going to be unique, and very Perth. It may even be your first investment in a very successful designer of the future.

If you’re in Perth and you want to spend, there are plenty of places that are worthy of your cash. And without a doubt you will also spot many a beautiful person worthy of your attention too!
