Accessories are to be shown off, envied, sough after, right? So its easy to wonder what use an invisible accessory would be. A lot actually! You can smell it but not see it.
Your choice of perfume is as important as any other accessory, and this one has to work a lot harder for you. Few people change their perfume day to day – we tend to stick with a signature scent. And when you wouldn’t dream of pairing your red 80s bangle with your khaki jacket dress, it’s funny that we rely on our favourite perfume to match our ensembles daily. Scents are a big indicator of personality, and most of us have a signature scent. How many of us know a girl that we smell before we see, or how often has a whiff of a familiar perfume in a foreign city instantly brought someone to mind? How we smell makes a big statement, and that makes choosing your scent a big deal. Ask Bronny has four common "scents" tips to have you turning heads with your scent (in conjunction with your fabulous ensemble of course!) 1. Accept the true smell Deep down, we all know that perfumes smell different on different people. Which means that the Allure that smells fantastic on your friend may actually stink on you. As much as that sucks, it's better to face facts than convince yourself that you smell as good as your mate and leave people gagging in your wake. Take the time to find a perfume that smells as good on you as it does coming out of the bottle. It’s worth the time and effort, and apparently take a handful of coffee beans with you to restore your senses. Once you’ve smelt about three to five fragrances, the experts tell me they all start to smell the same. 2. Don't swim in it Once you’ve found your faves, try not to drown yourself in it. There is a fine line between leaving a lovely lingering scent and overpowering a room to the point your colleagues stop, drop and roll. Spraying onto heat spots is an old favourite to keep the scent pumping as you heat up through the day, but the trick is to spray a mist in front of you then walk through it. My boyfriend finds it hysterical to watch as I do this, but it means the fragrance is evenly spread and finely applied. Perfect! 3. Learn the difference between day and night There are some perfumes that you just can't pull off during the day. They're too heavy, too sophisticated, too something. Accept that as much as your favourite perfume is almost all things to all outfits, there are some occasions where you do need to have a backup on hand. Lighter, fruiter perfumes like Donna Karen’s newbie are great daytime alternatives to pretty heavy fragrances like JPG’s signature scent. Although a heavenly, fabulous fragrance, sometimes its just too much for a day at the shops. 4. Don't be afraid to switch! There are times and places for perfumes, and many of us move through many signature scents as we move through life. Some scents are probably better left for the late teens and early 20s, and some probably can't be pulled off until you're in your late 30s. A good hint is how the stuff is marketed. Chances are if there are only 18 year olds hanging out at the beach in the ads, the scent isn't going to be right for your formal work presentation evening. That said, there is nothing wrong with pulling out the young fun scents when the situation calls for it. There's nothing like being freshly Tommy Girl-ed when you've got your tiniest shorts on at a laidback summer picnic. Smelling good is a wonderful thing. You feel better about yourself, and other people most definitely feel better about being around you. Your signature scent says a lot about you so you need to choose it wisely. Follow Ask Bronny's common scents guide and youll be smelling as amazing as you look, whatever the occasion! |
