There's this show called Inside the Actors Studio where the host
interviews prominent Hollywood actors and asks all sorts of
non-traditional, deep and meaningful questions about their craft and
associated experiences. One of the questions is 'What would God say to
you upon entering heaven?' So it got me thinking, and I decided on
this. God: The limit on your credit card has been upped…oh, and welcome to New York. Barney’s Co-Op Barney’s Co-op describes itself as the “wayward offspring of Barney’s New York.” Indeed, The Co-op is an edgier, riskier, cheekier diffusion version of the iconic Barney’s New York institution. Although smaller than its big sister, the co-op packs a powerful punch of drool-worthy clothes and accessories for rebellious shoppers willing to experiment with emerging designers as well as old-school classics. Head to the basement in Soho for the best selection of cult denim labels: Acne, Superfine, Ksubi, Earnest Sewn, 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Joes Jeans. Make sure you check out the eponymous shoe range that Barney does exclusively for the co-op. The only bad thing about this place is the annoyingly over-zealous, over-staffed hoard of employees that trail like shadows asking if you’d ‘Like to start a change-room.’ There are 3 co-op locations in Manhattan: 116 Wooster Street New York, NY, 236 West 18th Street New York, NY, 2151 Broadway New York, NY. Opening Ceremony The concept behind Opening Ceremony is as unique as the store is incredible. Each year the boutique imports hand-picked fashions from a different country. The owners first travel abroad to get a feel for the country before bringing a selection of garments back to Manhattan. Approximately two seasons worth is purchased each year from established foreign designers as well as up and comers. Previous collections have been from Brazil, Germany and the U.K (which featured a loft-space devoted entirely to Topshop). When I was there the country was Sweden. Co-incidentally I had arrived in New York from Stockholm and the collection was spot on. In ‘aint cheap, but then again stepping inside Opening Ceremony is akin to a free trip overseas. 35 Howard St, New York, NY. Space Mercer Around every corner in Manhattan there’s a gem waiting to be discovered. Sometimes, in all the chaotic giddiness that comes with shopping in the Big Apple, neatly tucked away treasures can be overlooked. So guard this one, because Space Mercer is a precious. The space is clean yet cosy, with wooden floorboards and warm earthy tones. The staff are very nice and with labels like Martin Margiela MM6, Rick Owens, Vanessa Bruno, Hanni Y and Burfitt walking out with a shopping bag is unavoidable. You may have to sell your soul to afford anything, but at least you’ll good…hey, it’s heaven after all! 115 Mercer St, New York, NY (btwn Prince & Spring) But remember that in the fickle world of Manhattan fashion retail, it’s not uncommon for shops to open and close faster than Lindsay goes in and out of rehab. So don’t procrastinate too long because now you see it…but tomorrow you might not. p.s: New Yorkers work late and party hard so many shops don’t open before 11 or even 12 so get your beauty sleep before hitting the shops. |
