Hi Bronny, My family is having our family picture taken this August. It will be an outdoor portrait. There will be mother, father, daughter, two sons and two grandsons in the photo. All my children are over 21. I was thinking of dressing everyone in a mocha, taupe colored tops with cream bottoms. Could we mix it up a little with any patterns in the same color range or stay solid. Also, could the women wear summer like tops with our arms showing or should we wear sleeves (it is only my daughter and me). I'm spending a lot of money on this and I don't want the wardrobe to stand out like a sore thumb. By the way my family is Spanish decent so I thought the colors would look good, unfortunately I not Spanish! I plan on getting a tan!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE. From Carla ANSWER Dear Carla, What a wonderful family mix! I think with a family portrait, it’s actually really important to capture the essence of your family – as such the clothes need to be a part of the shot and shouldn’t take away from what’s happening. Outside sounds really wonderful and I’m wondering if you’ve flipped through any mags lately and had a look at group settings and how the people are dressed. I think you could take inspiration from Ralph Lauren or even Tommy Hilfiger for an outdoor setting shot. How about white shirts and jeans – this always looks so crisp and clean – and never dates, which is a really important element to add to the photo as well. Also – white against darker skin looks just stunning and I think also adds a really classy element to the shot. So for example, if the adults were dressed in this way, then all you would need to do is dress the grandsons in a suitable way. I’m wondering how old they are? I’m going to assume the grandsons are younger. You could actually put yourself and your daughter in the white shirts and jeans and then put the guys into a light blue shirt and jeans. You could then match the two grandsons to what the guys are wearing. I think this could look really sophisticated and wouldn’t be a difficult look to achieve for all involved. Here’s a website I found for inspiration – notice the shot of everyone dressed in a shirt and jeans. I think this just looks awesome: http://www.imageworld.com.au/family.asp Another take for the grandsons could be instead of a shirt you could put them in polo shirts. You mentioned going for taupe colors, I actually think people with olive skin look fabulous in really bright colors. So another idea for the shot could be everyone again in jeans, but then bright colored polo tops on everyone! You also ask about revealing your arms, can I suggest that you only do this if you and your daughter both have very toned arms, otherwise you can go for a 3/4 or long sleeve. I hope these suggestions have helped and don’t forget, you can always go for the black option, just make sure your black match and that you get the photo in black and white. Let us know how you get on in the AskBronny clotheshorse, I can’t wait to hear. Love Bronny xxxx |
