Shameful Fashion

Written by Bronny
BumblebeeYellow&BlackLegWarmersWithHeels As the fashion world continues its love affair with the eighties, a shameful piece of clothing is returning. One of fashion's pariahs: leg warmers.
Throughout history designers have given life to some of the fashion world’s best loved icons. Coco Channel's suit, Twiggy's mini skirt, Gaultier's conical bra and even the humble 19th century bustle so brilliantly revived by Westwood over 100 years later. These classics will never die – and that's a good thing.

But in the 1980's something happened and an unlikely style icon was born. I'm talking about leg warmers. Yes those fuzzy woollen things that graced the legs of dancers and then somehow migrated to the legs of Cindy Lauper, Jennifer Beals (the frizzy-haired, gyrating wonder in Flashdance), Olivia Newton-John, Madonna and the catwalk!

Dancer's wore them and that was fine - but how the heck did they end up on the legs of fashionista's! Oh that would be the transformation of dancer to superstar and bringing with them their dancer attire.

For such a long time leg warmers were a source of ridicule and amusement relegated to the status of fancy dress attire. They certainly were not given the same standing as a Hermes scarf or a Burberry trench.  So you can understand my dismay when I discovered certain high street fashion chains have incorporated them in to their winter lines. When I spotted a pair proudly displayed on the wooden legs of a shop mannequin I wanted to scream "noooooooooooo!".

Leg warmers were hideous the first time around, why would anyone think they might look better the second or even third time round? For the last few seasons they have lingered on the out skirts of the fashion world, threatening to come back and I for one have had enough. I mean maybe on young girls leg warmers are okay - but if you are now a woman, then no way!

It's time to put these puppies back where they belong – alongside the Commodore 64, Choose Life shirts and that fashion aberration, the perm.

So for those of you who may be tempted to don the glorified woolly socks here are some alternatives to keep you looking fabulous while keeping the pins warm this winter:

  • Knee high boots: you can't go past a pair of classic leather boots. They look great over or under jeans, with skirts or dresses and they are ten times sexier than a pair of leg warmers.
  • Tights: I'm not just talking about any old tights. Go for colours, textures and designs that are bold. From the classic fishnet to tartan, hound’s-tooth and everything in between. Trust me, there’s a pair of tights out there with your name on it!
  • Leggings: yes I know they are a product of the eighties but before they were eighties, they were also sixties – think Jean Seberg in Jean Luc Goddard’s Breathless or Audrey Hepburn’s black leggings – well more like extremely skinny pants.  But they are sexy, stylish, hide unwanted bulges and can be worn with just about anything.
  • Opaques: yep, they are everywhere and look fab, especially with your shorty dress and boots - ankle or long!
So before you rush in to buying your winter wardrobe, stop and think; do you really need that pair of leg warmers? I suspect the answer is no.

Big boobs (over a size E) do not look good in strappy singlets: nobody wants to see those puppies on display, except at Spearmint Rhino.
