Heading off on holidays is always an exciting time. Jacquie lets AskBronny jump in the passenger seat as she talks road trip fashion and her top ten.
I just got back from two incredible weeks driving around the sun blessed north west coast of WA with my lovely partner. Snorkelling in crystal clear waters, diving with tropical fish, hiking up rugged mountains and navigating deep rocky gorges were just some of our daily pursuits, not to mention hours of driving.
Nature aside, I also learned a very valuable lesson – how to pack for a road trip.
I'm not stingy when it comes to packing the holiday wardrobe. I like to err on the side of caution. Yes I may be going to the outback but what if I get invited to a cocktail party? Best pack that little black dress and Gucci heels anyway. And what if there's a cold snap? Best pack the knee length boots leggings and trench.
For two weeks I lugged around an oversized suitcase, a large vanity case and goodness knows what else just in case. The simple truth is I used about a quarter of what I packed. I learnt the hard way so this is why I've decided to save you the same fashion predicament.
Here are my top ten tips to for road trip chic: 1. The Sarong This little beauty is an absolute Godsend in the sun. Not only are they great for lounging on the beach, you can also dress them up for that special stroll at sunset. Wear it as a low slung figure hugging skirt or take two ends, cross them over and tie them around your neck and voila! You’ve got an instant little halter neck dress.
2. The Sundress While we're on the topic of dresses, don't underestimate the power of the little cotton sundress. They're incredibly comfortable and cool attire for driving long distances.
3. The Bikini My little black bikini was probably the most featured article of clothing on this road trip. Choose a neutral colour like black, brown or white and it will go with anything – shorts or skirts.
4. Pair of Board shorts If you're like me (and many other women) and you don't have the legs of Cameron Diaz then showing off your thighs is not always an appealing prospect. Board shorts are a perfect way to hide those bulges and they go great with a bikini top. There's also a multitude of lengths and designs out there to choose from (men's and women's).
5. Pair of Thongs Who doesn't love a pair of Haviana's. The good old Aussie staple footwear made fashionista by Brazil. You can transform them from bogan flip-flops to sassy summer sandals with one simple step – paint your toenails! Black thongs with blood red nails if you're a conventional gal or for the more adventurous try pink thongs with green nails. (Tip: nail polish is also a great distraction when you’re a passenger).
6. A good lip moisturiser Okay, so this isn't clothing but you'd be surprised just how dry those lips can get after five hours on the road. You can't go wrong with a tube of Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment to keep you're lips soft and smooth. Find it at any good chemist.
7. Make-up Now being on holiday is also a great time to give the make-up a rest. But if the thought of doing without make up in those holiday snaps fills you with dread then go for something light. You can’t go wrong with a good tinted moisturises and a dusting of Revlon's skin highlights powder.
8. Hair serum If you're going near water then chances are the shampoo and conditioner aren't going to be enough to keep the locks in order. A good hair serum will not only help tame the frizz, it will also give your hair that added moisture. Tigi S Dream Drops gets my vote. Not easy to find but a small bottle lasts a long time.
9. Bonds hoodie The humble hoodie is going through a revival at the moment and it's not hard to see why. They are one of the most functional pieces of clothing a girl can have. It's also a road trip must just in case you need to ward off the evening chill.
10. Cowboy hat Made sexy by Elle and super cool by Thelma & Louise! It's my favourite kind of hat and will give your road trip that fashionista look - now if I only I could just find Brad Pitt. |
