Forget the scandalous bad girls, Hollywood’s true darlings are sweet little goody-2-shoes celebutantes that we all just love to love! We're talking Bronny's Angels: Natalie, Jessica, Jen and Cameron.
So we all get a tiny thrill out of seeing a bedraggled starlet emerging drunkenly from her limo, sans underwear, with leaking mascara, ripped tights and triumphantly bad hair. But imagine how much more effort it takes to look and act consistently perfect? Granted, if you are anyone in celebrity-land, you have a whole trailer-load of people employed to make you look wonderful. But don't you think that there are just a few stand-out 'it-girls' amongst the trout pouts and glistening cleavages? The four glamorous 'good' gals who I believe stand out in the fashion stakes are Cameron Diaz, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Alba (could she be any more gorgeous in that picture!). Admittedly others - like Scarlett Johannson and Siena Miller - consistently make louder fashion splashes; but these two don’t really deserve to be called 'good' girls, do they? Nope, Nat, Jess, Jen and Cam seem unscathed by scandal, untarnished by fame – the kind of girls that your boyfriend's parents wished they had brought home instead of you. Lights, Cameron, Action! With a diverse heritage including Cuban, German and Native-American, the girl with the boy's name first put her naturally thin frame and stunning looks to use as a model. From the age of seventeen, Cameron modelled for Elite Model Management, working for designers such as Calvin Klein and Levi’s. Without any other roles to her name, Diaz was cast as the female lead in the Jim Carrey film, The Mask, at the tender age of twenty-one. With her natural comic timing and equally natural beauty, Cameron soon rocketed to the Celebrity A List, starring in a few indie-films, before concentrating on the mainstream Rom-Com genre. Apart from a dowdy, kooky role in Being John Malkovich, Cameron has never really done anything to woo the critics – yet neither has she played a role to provoke large-scale negative criticism. She has managed to up-grade on every high-profile romance; from Matt Dillon, to Jared Leto, and then the whole Justin Timberlake whirlwind. With JT, Diaz reinforced her reputation as a Hollywood darling. She maintained a distance between her personal and public profiles, showing professional maturity and girl-power independence. Their break-up has made Cameron even more of a sweetheart, by the mere fact that she has maintained her poise, stayed friends with her ex and – significantly – stayed herself. Cameron’s style is consistent in that she always looks consistently fabulous. Veering from Californian Beach babe to Red-Carpet goddess, Cameron has a way of putting her fun persona into often simple but flattering garb. She is also someone who can pull off a whole variety of looks – from long brunette to a cute blond bob, a short shift to a glitzy gown. Her white ruffle dress at the Oscars might have looked like a toilet-roll holder on anyone else, but with a new hair colour and slash of red lippy, she somehow managed to win over the hardened fashion critics. We love Cam because we know she hoes into greasy burgers. We love Cam because she broke her nose surfing with Kelly Slater. We love Cam because she allegedly battles with acne [whatever…]. Of course, sometimes good girls make mistakes and, as I write this, poor Cam is feeling the backlash of the nation of Peru for unwittingly causing insult by wearing a pro-Mao satchel. Oh well – nobody’s perfect… A Glass of Portman There are some starlets who you don't really mind your partner having a massive crush on. Face it; if you were a lad, you'd be mad about Natalie Portman too. Born in Jerusalem in 1981, Natalie Herslag's family immigrated to the United States when she was three. She was 'discovered' by a Revlon agent at the age of twelve, but shunned modelling for an acting career. That year, Natalie made her film debut in Luc Besson's Léon, taking her grandmother’s surname as her stage name for reasons of privacy. After becoming the best thing about the Star Wars Prequels, the new 'it-girl' of Hollywood's good girl set began a degree in psychology at Harvard. In case that acting gig ever fell through. After graduating and a few starring roles on Broadway, Natalie appeared in two indie-films – Garden State and Closer – the first which showcased her acting depth and the second which cemented it with a Golden Globe and an Academy nomination. Proving that she would sacrifice her looks for her craft, Natalie shaved off all of her hair for the thriller V for Vendetta. Hollywood then declared "you don't need hair to be hot." Natalie has been linked to the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal (Bronny's personal fave so I hear), the lead singer of Maroon Five and the hottest short man in the business, Gael Garcia Bernal (Mmmm). Yet she is probably more renowned for her commitment to actual worthy causes - significantly environmental groups and incentives to end poverty. In terms of fashion, Natalie has been constantly likened to Audrey Hepburn as a 'classic' and effortless beauty. She even appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar dressed in the very same iconic Givenchy gown that Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's. She is a different kind of 'natural' beauty then Cameron, and yet consistently manages to steal the hearts of even the best boyfriends. Don’t worry, she's a good girl, remember? The former Mrs Pitt Poor Jen. She has about as much luck as a fish in a leaky bucket. From her ground-breaking hairdo in Friends (the 'Rachel'), Jennifer Aniston has earned her role as the wholesome golden girl of Hollywood. The daughter of a famous Greek-American soap star, John Anistasakis, young Jen trudged through a string of bad television roles before making it big in the hugely popular sitcom. Her on-screen persona, along with her down-to-earth presence in all interviews, made Jen into a fresh-faced star. The world was obsessed with her marriage to Brad the Cad. Their public appearances were the stuff of fairy tales – should couples be this good-looking (awww the J shaped lapel is just tooo cute!)? When it all exploded, millions of women worldwide sympathised with the Cinderella story with an unhappy ending, joining 'Team Aniston' in a battle with 'Team Jolie.' Although her film roles have not raised her profile to the huge extent of Friends, Jennifer still maintains a steady fan-base, largely because of her classic yet chic style. AskBronny herself says "She is so pristine, you could eat off her". Jen has always been pretty simple in presentation, letting sparkling hair and limber limbs take precedent. And recently, she has been out and about with the most delectable man we have seen for a very long time - go Jen we say - we looooove this accessory. Just Jessica Like the Jennifer's, there have also been many Jessica’s in Hollywood and while everyone is cringing at what ridiculous thing Jessica Simpson might do next, no-one ever has to worry about Jessica Alba doing the same. Like Cam, Jessica hails from a diverse ethnic background; with Mexican, French and Danish heritage. After a whole lot of never-seen teen movies, Jessica improved her ho-hum career prospects with a role in Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore. Catching the eye of James Cameron, Alba starred in the sci-fi television series Dark Angel, where she launched her reputation as an on-screen kitten and off-screen nice girl. Despite playing a stripper in Sin City, Alba has a strict no-nudity clause in her contract – like Portman, who also ironically played a stripper without revealing all. While Jessica takes on roles that barely challenge the average brain, she manages to still sparkle off-screen in flawless public appearances. Like Diaz, she moves from brunette to blonde gracefully. While Jessica Biel and Jessica Simpson like to let it all hang out on the red carpet, Jess Alba is more likely to don something elegant, like the gorgeous gold Versace frock she wore to the Oscars. She does casual chic with far less effort then Paris, and fills a bikini like nobody else in real-life. She might not have much acting scope, but she sure has a good stylist… Okay, so you might disagree with my choices. Where is SJP and Nicole, you say? You might find these girls, with their happy, healthy, "normal" personas, to be a little lacklustre for your tastes. So they might be boring in their predictably good behaviour, but isn't it refreshing to see the good girls getting the attention that those bad girls crave so badly? |
