Becoming a Stylist |

Hi Bronny, Well I’m very interested in becoming a fashion stylist but I’m unsure what major to take or what school is the best. When I think of fashion I either think of New York or California but I live in Pennsylvania so New York is closer to home. I am going to be a senior in high school this year. I’m really confused on what I should do and how I go about everything if you can please give me some information that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again *niKKi* =) ANSWER Hi Nikki, How exciting that you actually know what you would like to do! This is half the challenge in finding a career that is going to work for you. And you are still young enough to make it happen. Fabulous! Because that means you can actually start styling right now! Does your school ever have fashion parades? No, then start organising one – maybe as a fundraiser and guess who is going to style it – YOU! Does your school have a newspaper or magazine? Do they have fashion pages in the mag? No, well guess what they do now – and guess who is going to style those pages – YOU! This is how you begin your career as a stylist, you start working for free whilst educating yourself. You need to be taking classes like Textiles, Art History, things that are going to teach you about color, style and design. Next you can start looking at the Technology schools, these schools usually have fashion and design courses. Your aim isn’t to become a designer but rather to understand about fashion and how it works and indeed how various styles are going to work for people. Next, is you – think about what you like! What is your personal style, do your friends compliment you on what you wear? I’d also take out a subscription to Vogue and make sure I read it from cover to cover every month. In fact you want to be reading as many magazines as you can. I myself subscribe to about a number and read them from cover to cover every month. I can suggest Vogue, Elle, Cleo, Cosmo, Shop Til You Drop, Marie Claire and Glamour as a good starting point. You also need to make sure you are visiting style.com and net-a-porter.com regularly. Stylists need to be up on the latest designs and styles that are coming in. Lastly, every chance you get go shopping. Not necessarily to buy, but rather to understand what is available and in the shops. I’m always out and about, popping into various shops, going to the opportunity shops, vintage stores, anywhere that sells clothes. Volunteer to shop with anyone who wants to go. You shop with them, you dress them – it’s that simple. Tell the shop owners that you are starting out as a stylist so if they ever need someone to style the mannequins in the windows or parades that you are available to help in fitting the clothes or whatever is needed. Lastly, get a job in retail. I’d suggest a clothes shop or one of the big department stores. This will put your foot firmly in the door and give you access to new looks and styles. Good luck and do let me know how you get on. Make sure you come and let me know at the Clotheshorse where I’m always surfing and checking out what the AskBronny gals have to say. Love Bronny xxxx |
