Jane Stabler how made the move, swapping West for East. She gives us the insider information on how best to deal with a move from one of the country to the other
I have very recently relocated from one coast of my fabulous country (Australia) to the other. And it has been through this rather large move that I discovered several things, one of which was that maybe my Dad is right and I could actually go a decade without the need to purchase any new shoes. But most importantly I learned that relocation can simultaneously be an utterly fashionable move, and an incredibly unfashionable event. Moving to a bigger, brighter, more exciting city evokes images of new bars, new shoes, and a new interstate (or international) version of fabulous you. Or in this case, me. What it doesn’t conjure up are the images of the actual move itself. Even us AskBronny fashionista types struggle to be fashionable and glamorous whilst lumping great boxes of kitchenware about prior to the big move. And then lumping those same boxes about again in the new home in the new, fabulous city is no more glamorous than the first time around. No matter how great the view out of the window of your fabulous new apartment, or how trendy the cafes nearby in your fashionable new suburb, carting great heavy boxes of your stuff up numerous stairs is not something you can look fashionable whilst doing. Even for the sensible amongst us who have the foresight to hire help, there is still the debacle of unpacking everything you packed at the other end. And unwrapping all that newspaper from your favourite martini glasses is guaranteed to turn your fingers, and whatever you’re wearing, black. Not glamorous at all. So even if the idea of putting your best Sass&Bide jeans on to celebrate the arranging of your new house seems like a good one, its not. Wait until everything is in its place, your hands are their normal colour again and then crack open the champers. Take it from a moving pro. Despite wearing incredibly old sneakers and an outfit that I would only allow my nearest and dearest to see me in, the fabulous inner me has ensured that the Moet is chilling in the fridge, and the perfect celebrate-my-new-house ensemble is waiting to be donned, just as soon as all that newspaper is out of sight… But once it is, the fashionable side of a big move to a big city is evident. A new city brings a new sense of style. For some, it’s the opportunity to take on a whole new look. A new city gives you the liberty to wear the kind of outfits you’ve secretly wanted to for months but that your friends just wouldn’t let you get away with at home. The chance to start fresh in your outlook, and your outer look, is a rare one, so grab it firmly. (But of course keep a hand free to be placed on your credit card at every opportune moment.) Cities also have their own sense of style, so take note of what’s going on in the world of your new city’s pre-established fashionistas. Take the time to do some people watching in the trendy pockets of town and take your fashion cues from those in the know. If you’re looking for something less carbon copy, bigger cities also mean more people, which means more variations of style, more fashion freedom, and often more fashion followers. Figure out which new city style suits you, and go for it. Find the shopping precincts that suit your style and start taking advantage of the new city fashionista that you are! |
