Dress Code at work
Written by Bronny
Hey Bronny,

I work in an office environment as my day-job, but I'm really not a suit-wearing kinda guy, I'm 29, tall with sandy-blonde hair. Whilst I can wear a suit, I prefer to wear some dressy jeans and a nice shirt, can I get away with this in today's day and age?

Thanks,
James

ANSWER

Dear James,

Unfortunately if your dress code is ‘corporate’ then jeans do not fit into this category.  You would need to confirm with HR just exactly what the dress code is.  For example, I have worked in places where the dress code was ‘casual’ which meant I could wear jeans to work everyday. Most corporate environments these day have a casual Friday where it would be more than okay to wear the dressy jeans and a nice shirt.

Unfortunately if everyone wears a suit in your office then I would say that this is the dress code and you will probably need to stick to it. Also, in the office environment you can be judged by what you wear and you may find that if you start turning up in jeans that some people might think you’re not taking your job as seriously as others – ouch!

Let me know what HR says in the Clotheshorse forum as I’d be really keen to see what they say!
