When you think about jewelry designs, do the names Tiffany and Co. and Bulgari come to mind? Ever strolled down a shopping strip and peered inside the windows and fallen in love with a diamond ring, pendant or earrings? Have you ever wondered about the designs behind your sparkling fascinations? This week, Ask Bronny takes a look at jewelry design.
The ever elegant designs of Tiffany began way back in the 1800s when Charles Lewis Tiffany and John Young wanted to create the best possible jewels the world had ever seen. They strove to create and produce jewelry that would be classical and elegant. In the early 1900s, Charles’ son, Louis Comfort Tiffany, began designing the jewelry which was inspired by nature and various cultures around the world. Today, however, Tiffany designs come from three unique and determined designers. They are: Frank Gehry, Elisa Peretti and Paloma Picasso. Frank Gehry is an architect, whose works include the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. His jewelry designs are unique and his influences when creating jewelry stem via all walks of life – from his childhood to the Renaissance. His jewelry is defined by sharp angles and his ability to use unusual materials. His specialty includes using black gold and cacholong stone. Elisa Peretti’s designs are influenced by nature – bones, beans, shells to name a few. She works with sterling silver and some of her innovative designs include the Equestrian belt buckle, Diamonds by the Yard and Pearls by the Yard. She creates sensual and sculptured jewelry; a trait only suited to a Tiffany jewel. Paloma Picasso’s heritage may be one of the reasons for her unique sense of jewelry design, her father being the pioneering abstract artist of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso. She works with 18 karat gold and silver and her designs innovative and bold. She uses bold and distinctive colours and creates whimsical shapes, links and weaves when designing. Another popular jewelry designer is Bulgari, often written with its Roman name, Bvlgari. It was founded by Sotorio Bulgari and the company was born in 1884 in Rome, Italy. It combines Greek and Roman jewelry designs and also creates handbags, watches, fragrances, accessories and hotels! During the 1970s, the store was opened in numerous international locations such as New York, Paris, Geneva and Monte Carlo. Although, the flagstaff store can be found in via Condotti in Rome. Bulgari designs are exquisite as they are bold yet brutal and often combine large weighty gold links with black surface steels. Many of their designs also utilize precious gems and stones, giving many pieces of jewelry the Bulgari association, usually at first glance of a necklace or earring. Jewelry design is an elegant and even sensual experience, it’s no wonder the very best seems to last forever. And as Marilyn once said “diamonds are a girl’s best friend!” Stay logged onto AskBronny for more about jewelry or why not tell us what you think on the Clothes Horse forum. |
