Feeling Unfashionable

Written by Nicola Hyland
Pink and purple platformsEver feel like yelling 'hide me, i'm hideous!'? While supermodels get paid millions to get out of bed, some days do you wish you hadn’t got up at all? Ugly days, argh!
Never fear, the cure to the WIWI* day is here! Let’s take a look at what can make us feel fab when we think we look drab. Ever had one of those days when you feel that you look like a hideous swamp monster? When everyone around you looks like a gorgeous Glamazon, while you are left feeling like Ugly Betty? Unless you are super-humanly perfect and always look like an air-brushed wonder, you will have undoubtedly faced the dreaded "Wish I was Invisible" (WIWI) day. From a hideous new blemish, sudden unexplained weight gain or bad hair day, to a complete wardrobe malfunction, fashion breakdown or general discomfort in your own skin, we have all faced that frustrating day when the mirror hates us.

You know the sort. While long-suffering partners look on, we cry "I have nothing to wear!" or "I look like a buffalo in this dress!!!" or "You can't see my face behind this massive volcano of a pimple!" Sometimes – on the most dire of WIWI days – some people might cancel an appointment, date, party entrance or even call in 'sick' instead of going to work, because their physical appearance has wreaked havoc on their mental clarity.

While nothing ruins my day more then the unexpected arrival of a cold sore, I am also often left feeling a little bush-pig-like during that time of the month. Recently, having fallen prey to that horrible winter cold, I have also had to face the world with a red and runny nose, which is difficult to disguise even with industrial-strength foundation. Other things which can set off a WIWI day are when I have been lazy with my laundry and am left with only the clothes that never fitted, or should never have left the store I brought them from.

I guess the one thing that should make you all feel better is that everyone has days like this. Some people may appear to breeze through life, looking like magnificent thoroughbreds, when in reality they might be feeling a little more uggers then the rest of us. The other important point you should consider [but possible won't believe anyway] is that it never looks as bad as you think it does. We are, of course, our own harshest critics. What you think is incredibly noticeable, may actually not be noticed by anyone at all. I believe that instead of wishing you were invisible, it is much better for yourself and others around you if you actually celebrate your 'visibility' - and work around the bits you hate.

Here are a few ideas you can consider next time you get out of the disastrous side of the bed:

Glad Rags Make you Less Sad: The whole idea that if you feel like rubbish means you have an excuse to look like rubbish is a load of trash itself. Sometimes if I am really tired, sick or just feeling blue, I put on my favourite never-fail hot-girl clothes; the garb you usually only wear on special occasions. People will say "You look great" and then after a while you start to feel great too. True fashionistas will recognise the energy boost that comes from looking fabulous.

Something old can be Something New: Feel like you have nothing to wear? I bet, at the back of your wardrobe or in the bottom drawer is something you haven't thought about for a few months, or even forgotten existed at all. If you are sick of being same-old, wearing a piece no-one has ever seen might make you feel a little less blah. I have recently got in the habit of wearing forgotten bright summer dresses with opaque stockings and long tops underneath to beat the winter blues (or greys).

Float the bloat: One of the best aspects of the current fashion trends are the focus on 'floaty' and 'relaxed' designs, such as the loose maxi-dresses for summer, oversized sweater-tops, baby-doll and empire-line dresses and even A-line smocks. The reason these designs rock is that they hide a number of lumps and bumps while still managing to make the wearer look great. Feeling frumpy? Team a loose dress with boots for instant fabulousness.

Scarves, Hats and Headbands cover any hair catastrophes: Britney was kind of on the right track by embracing funky headgear to hide her bad bald noggin. Scarves and headbands can be miracle workers for rebellious hair [I love that description, like hair can actually 'misbehave]'. You can also detract from so-so hair with funky eye make-up or even a funky outfit. My secret weapon is the time-honoured bobby pin – almost invisible, always reliable.

Accessorise for Life: Never underestimate the power of bling! Draw attention away from the areas you hate the most – with chunky necklaces, belts, bangles or even sparkly shoes. My favourite accessories at the moment are brooches. While I have a few old-lady glam ones, I have also recently come across some really cute resin brooches shaped like birds and animals that are just so cute.

Treat with Tricks: Sometimes a saviour can come in the form of a safety-pin or a bit of Hollywood tape. Invest in a few handy 'tricks' for wardrobe malfunctions or fashion catastrophes. Sometimes you can improvise with household items – cotton face pads are great for blisters, smeary make-up, preventing sweaty patches and even 'tic-tac nipple' moments! Like the Scout motto says, be prepared sisters!

Just Ride it: Sometimes it seems like nothing will fix you, so on these days it is important to just remember to stay calm and ride it through. Bad body-image days are there to keep you grounded and pave the way for days when you know you look a million percent. Focusing on more important things is a wise diversion [More important things! Isn’t fashion the be all and end all?] Remember Things can always be a lot worse. Think about your good points!
