Don't you love having lazy days, when you know you don't have to leave the house. You slide into you best trackies, old singlet and maybe a pair or havianas, or slippers. (Each to there own!) Well, if that's your cup of tea then you'd be happy to hear that the and I don't care, lazy look is taking the fashion world by storm!! I kid you not, dumpster chic is the thing!
Remember the Full House days?? Who could forget little Michelle Tanner, played by the Olsen twins Mary Kate & Ashley, who knew they would grow up and take over the world? Well not quite take over, but with a kids clothing line, make-up, production company, plus their acting gigs and a whole lot more you can see why it's easy to think that. The Olsen twins are worth an estimated 275million dollars. Yeah that's right 275MILLION DOLLARS! Buying Gucci and Dior to them would be like buying things from Target, K-Mart or H&M to us! So why then you ask, do we see Miss Mary Kate Olsen strutting her stuff in downtown Manhattan looking like she just crawled out of a cardboard box, with her oversized glasses, layers upon layers of clothing & accessories, oversized jackets (with holes) and hair that looks like it's afraid of water?? Yes that's right, everything I mentioned above is the latest fashion craze to hit town – Dumpster Chic. Mary Kate was probably not the founder of this new craze, but she sure has put it out there for everyone to see. Some like to call it Dumpster chic, but I think the correct term is "Bobo". Bobo standing for "Bohemian Bourgeois" or in other words Rich Hippie. It's a borrowed word from the title of a five year work of pop sociology, "Bobo's In Paradise" by David Brooks. It's even hit the catwalks, Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 06 collection had a very bobo grunge feel to it. Fur, sparkles, oversized knits, layered of course and huge hats. I wonder if MK inspired it, or if she's been watching too many eighties music videos! It's not every fashonista's cup of tea, as with any new style their are things to love and hate about it-at AskBronny we love that if you've had a few extra donuts it won't be too noticeable, we hate- that if you are a broad or voluptuous person this look could make it seem like your stashing extra donuts, and carrying a few extra pounds. Something Mary Kate could use a few more of! MK has always had her own style, you can definitely differentiate her from Ashley, but since leaving LA to study in New York, and her style has definitely grown and become more defined. Style is what you make it, and MK certainly makes it interesting. And as for the question dumpster chic or plain eeek? let's see: CONS:I have seen pics of her carrying bags so big she could live comfortably in for a week or so, and jackets so tatty had I walked past her I would have given her spare change. PROS: Then I have seen her wearing the oversized shades (which I myself am guilty of) that look amazing and underwear as outerwear (guilty again) which can be a tricky one to get right and accessorized to the max but looking fab. And even though she's a millionaire and in the public eye she's not afraid to mix designer with mass market brands. Or wear no designer at all! How couldn't we say dumpster chic?? Just like other fans of dumpster chic including “fashion icons”: Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, they love to experiment and the result is... who’dve thought, (gasp), something original, which is not often seen these days. I love how they are not afraid to go out in something not so mainstream, or just something they’ve thrown on something for comfort which happens to look quiet stylish, yet original. I admire these girls for having so much personal style, not caring a whole lot what others say. So wether you’re a fan or not, expect to see more of this dumpster chic on the streets and not just in the comfort of your own home. Chic – coming to a Dumpster near you. |
