Are We All Just Faking It
Written by Tara Ramsay
Are We All Just Faking It? That is the question, there is no point buying (or saving for) a Louis Vuitton bag, wallet or anything with the trademark LV on it these days, because Mr. Tran sells them at his corner shop for $15 or less (although the price seems to be rising!) What a bargain. Who could resist and who can tell the difference?

Well no-one it seems, because every 14yr old and their cat seems to own something from the Louis Vuitton Collection, or should be call it Louie Wutton? If I saw Miss Paris Hilton herself strutting down Chapel St (Melbourne shopping strip) carrying one of these trademark handbags, I could assume it's fake (although it's Paris Hilton, so it's probably not fake. But you get my point).  Unless I asked to see the inside the bag to check out whether it has all the details of an original, then how could I be sure it's real?  So what is my point you’re wondering?

My point is that you should put all you LV or even most Chanel bags and wallets back in the closet! Because unless you keep the receipt and paste it (stapling would cause unwanted damage) to the front of the bag, then I and every other fashion obsessed woman, girl, gay guy (or straight guy for arguments sake) would assume you have been shopping at Mr Trans corner store. And even if it's very real and you haven't been paying rent because you spent all of it on this very real bag, people may still assume it's fake.

Who could forget the episode of Sex & The City when the girls take a trip to LA , there they attend a party at the playboy mansion, where Samantha's Fendi Bag (which was bought out of a boot for $150) was stolen. She acuses a playmate who has the exact bag on her arm of stealing it, when the playmate shows Samantha the inside of the bag she realizes that the playmates Fendi is very much real (unlike the rip off she had stolen from her). They are then thrown out by Hef's security. If Samantha can't tell a real Fendi from a fake Fendi, how the Fendi can we!? (yes I know it's TV but c'mon this is Sex & The City, the watchable fashion bible!).

Ah, now that's off my chest and it's all out in the open let's talk about fake friends or people (aka: us) being fake in general.  I would never have considered myself as a fake person, I thought I was the 'real deal' until a girl I went to high school with, who happens to be good friends with my best friend (confused yet) got back from overseas, after 2 years, and I tagged along with my bestie to her welcome back drinks at some pub.

I was having a chat to one of my other friends who was there, telling them that I never really got on or "clicked" with this girl whose drinks we were out for, actually - she drove me nuts, the reason I never got along with her at school was because she was a moron. A few minutes after that conversation "Moron" as we will refer to her as came bounding over and clung to me like a magnet to a fridge, telling me how great it was to see me and how much she missed me?

I was like (‘what the f...)" OMG how are you? You look great you cut your hair, "blah blah" and spewed out compliments and shit that seemed to go on forever. Then Moron left to go to the bar and the friend I was in a convo with previous to moron showing up was like " I thought you two didn't click or even like each other?”, and that got me thinking - how many friends do we have that are just - Faking it?

These days there is so much to fake - fake smile, fake hair, fake tan, fake TV, fake designer bags, fake jobs and even fake orgasms!

I was in "Fake Heaven" whilst on a holiday in Koh Samui ,Thailand, it was every where bags, watches, sunglasses and wallets. All sorts of designers, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Fendi, Dior and the new fake rip off Chloe bag! No matter how much I shopped (and boy did I shop!) I couldn’t bring myself to buy any of these tempting but not so real items, I saw people going wild over them almost drooling! In America the same thing, people on the streets of New York with boxes stuffed full, if you so much as looked at them they would have the box unpacked in a matter of seconds with bags spilling all over the sidewalk! (highly illegal of course!)

I guess at some point we all fake it one way or another.  And who can tell who's faking it and who isn’t? I thought I was an honest person until I was faked out and felt compelled to have a friendly fake reunion with someone I refer to as Moron?

Are we doing it just to keep the peace, so that we don't complicate our lives anymore than they complicate themselves?  Or are we all just faking it?

What the fake is going on?

"Money has nothing to do with being stylish. It's about being born with that inner eye and having the confidence to convey a sense of yourself outwardly. You can't buy that. It's genetic." Sarah Mower, Fashion Journalist
