As the curtain on 2008 draws to a close, Ask Bronny reveals which celebrities were indeed fashionistas and which were fashion road kill.
With 2008 being a big year in fashion – reprisal of the chic and feminine look inspired by the glamour of the 40s and the androgynous designs that created cute yet sexy runway fashion. Quirky shoe designs seen at Paris fashion week and heelless creations will make 2008 a memorable year for our feet!
Many of us, however, look to celebrities for fashion inspiration and may of them do get it right, making our jobs all the more easy when browsing through racks of clothes. The best dressed for 2008 are:
(Be sure to click on the star’s name to see their outfit)
Heidi Klum Mother, entrepreneur, model, designer, and producer – is there anything Heidi can’t do? Always looking ravishing in whatever she wears but it was at the Oscars earlier on in the year where she really shone. She was the epitome of glamour in a red Galliano gown that was designed especially for her. With a sweeping train and dramatic collar, Heidi even wore her own jewellery collection to accessorise the dress. After the event, the supermodel even had the dress and the jewellery auctioned to help raise funds for the Red Dress Campaign for Heart Truth. Even when she's in jeans - she's rockin.
Jessica Alba This new yummy mummy always looks stunning and it’s as though she doesn’t even try! Recently giving birth to a baby girl with her husband Cash Warren, Jessica was snapped out and about wearing a grey, yellow and black dress that came just above the knee. Accessorised with a brown beaded necklace and black oversized bag and sunglasses to match, Jessica looked gorgeous. At the Oscars this year, pregnant Jessica was glowing in a strapless plum Marchesa gown that was accentuated with feathers and draped empire waistline.
Katie Holmes Katie seems to be getting hotter by the minute! Her hair is constantly being updated and with fashionable friends like Victoria Beckham to get tips from, it’s no wonder she looks sophisticated and chic these days on any red carpet. Since meeting Giorgio Armani a few ago, the Italian designer has taken Katie under his wing and designed many of her gowns. Next year she is launching a clothing line – Katie Holmes for Giorgio Armani. Her daughter Suri is the line’s inspiration as the collection is aimed at toddlers. She even works a pair of boyfriend jeans with style.
Miranda Kerr She struts down the cat walk as a Victoria’s Secret model, is dating Hollywood hottie Orlando Bloom and is the face of David Jones in Australia. Can life get any better for Miranda Kerr? Always looking immaculate, the was seen at the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne waring a canary yellow Lisa Ho frock accentuated by ruffles and highlighted with an off white fascinator.
Zac Efron Zac has been hot property this year with the prequel to High School Musical – HSM 3, Senior Year being a smash hit. He was recently Down Under promoting the film with his co-stars Vanessa Hudgens and Ashleigh Tisdale. On the red carpet, catch him in skinny ties and classic suits always looking ultra cool and effortlessly spunky. He takes simple items like jeans, shirts and vests and accessories them with a contrasting belts and funky sneakers.
Daniel Craig Mr James Bond himself looked smouldering on the red carpet at the Quantum of Solace premier. In the movie itself, he wears custom made suits designed by Tom Ford. The suits are simple, yet sophisticated and fit well enough for Bond to run, jump and chase after the bad guys without looking contorted on his physique. To steal Daniel’s look, modernize your suit by being daring with colour – try and off- white with a light and basic coloured shirt and dress it up with a matching tie or for a less formal event, leave the tie at home.
2008 also proved to be the year where some stars would have been better saying away from the camera instead of flaunting their dismal fashion statements. This year’s worst dressed list includes:
The Veronicas Brisbane twins Jess and Lisa need to fire their stylist! The girls can sure belt out a tune but seem to miss the mark when it comes to fashion. They often appear in over-the-top outfits that do nothing for their petite figures. And too much black eyeliner and red lipstick is never alright! At this year’s ARIAs, they arrived in matching attire – Jess’s necklace resembled bike chains around her neck and Lisa’s metallic frock did nothing to accentuate her figure.
Sandra Oh The Grey’s Anatomy star got it all wrong at SAG awards this year. Supposedly Korean inspired, the gown looked as though an amateur had designed it. With an over sized pink bow that covered her chest and long bulbous black bottom, this dress would have looked better if it was left on the rack.
Daniel Day-Lewis This Oscar winner looked rather uncomfortable on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars. Maybe it was those baby poo brown shoes! Despite taking home Best Actor for his performance in ‘There will be Blood’, he wouldn’t have won any awards for his choice of suit. With brown hemline around the collar and even brown shoes to match, this ensemble looked dismal. And it didn’t help with his wife wearing an even more hideous creation!
2008 was indeed a great year for fashion with many of the seasons looks taking inspiration from designs in the past. To be in the best dressed list doesn’t require you to be wearing couture gowns down a red carpet, but rather wearing clothes that suit your shape and accentuate your figure or highlight your best features. It is ok to be daring with fashion, but it’s important to know when daring becomes ridiculous! For anymore fashion advice, be sure to Ask Bronny! |
