But despite the keen fashion followers embracing the trend, it didn’t really take off the way the catwalks intended. The fact we all wore something similar when we were two quite possibly had something to do with it. That said, it hasn’t just given up and gone away. According to those in the know, it seems the jumpsuit is back, and being dubbed the hottest trend to emerge in recent showings.

This year’s spring-summer collections in New York and London showed that designers internationally are standing by the all in one trend, from sequins to silk to strapless, the jumpsuit was there in its all in one glory for all to see. DKNY showed denim, and Australia’s own Willow went for orange jersey. Others jumping on board include Fleur Wood, Yeojin Bae, the ever stylish Bracewell and of course London’s Topshop Unique.

It will be interesting to see if the second time around will offer a longer, and more widely embraced, lifespan for the jumpsuit. In 2006/07 I had friends who heartily embraced the fashion – not only was it cute, it was an all in one. No need to worry if your bottom matched your top – the decision was made for you! I can see the benefits.

So, for those who are taking on the trend with new zealous now that the jumpsuit is showing its staying power, here are a few ways to ensure you don’t end up looking like a toddler all over again.

Firstly, make sure the suit you invest in works for your style. If you’re not into floaty fabrics usually, Fleur Wood’s silk interpretation is unlikely to actually make it out of your closet after you hang it up.

Don’t forget your jumpsuit can be versatile. Wear the zipper or buttons down and team with a bright singlet beneath to create a different casual look, or add a belt and heels to take it from day to night.

Finally, be prepared! As silly as it sounds, an all in one demands extra attention despite being an easy one stop shop outfit on the surface. Jumpsuits are not ideal wear for shopping or a night on the town purely due to the fact you basically have to get naked in order to try anything on, or pop to the loo. Keep this in mind when determining what occasion will see you wriggling into your trendy little number.

However, like any fashion trend, half the fun is taking the plunge, and getting away with a trend is mostly about your attitude. If you strut down the street in your new DKNY denim boilersuit with perfectly matched accessories feeling like you just stepped off the catwalk, yourself chances are people will observe you in exactly the same way.  Plus, the joy of today’s shopping world means that if you’re keen to take the plunge on this re-emerging fashion but are looking for a lower cost option, you can just hedge your bets. With even the likes of Wish picking up the trend this time around, even if you decide at the last minute you cant face the world in the all in one hanging in your closet, you won’t have blown the bank balance attempting to.
