Susannah Leigh-Murray

Written by Bronny
You might remember Susannah Leigh-Murray from Big Brother 2007. At AskBronny we her for her brilliant sense of fashion. That's why she's joining our team blogging as Liberty Harlow. We asked Susannah our top 10 fashion Q's. Susannah Leigh-Murray first came to our attention as a housemate in the final series of Big Brother Australia 2007. It was her fashion sense first and foremost that everyone noticed. The gorgeous clothes, the fabulous figure and of course her lovely personality. Susannah was a favorite for many a fashionista! Since then Susannah has established herself in the world of modelling and is a regular on the red carpet. AskBronny is so very lucky to have Susannah join the Blogging crew in her guise as fashionista Liberty Harlow. We welcome Susannah to our fashion family and ask her our most pressing fashion questions in this top 10 Q&As with SLM.

1. You first came to public attention on Big Brother. What did you learn from that experience?

Before going into the house I spent a lot of time worrying what people thought of me - going into the house gave me confidence to actually like and accept who I am and to stand up for myself. It also taught me a lot about what people are like at the 'core' of their personality. In that kind of isolation, you revert back to exactly who you were in high school. For me, I was always the peace-maker, friends with the cool kids and friends with the nerds, a happy medium.

2. You always looked amazing in the house, how did you manage that?

Ha ha, thankyou! I must admit, I did go on a bit of a shopping spree on Chapel before I went in. My visa card was seriously hurting. Some of the other girls would see me get ready in the morning and ask 'why was I getting dressed up?' but to me, I was just wearing what I would normally do on any regular day here in Melbourne. I guess thats the 'Chapel Street' in me. It was really important not to give into peer pressure, or wear something different because another girl was giving me a hard time about it. I'm a girlie girl and I love clothes - and thats not going to change just because I'm in the Big Brother house!

3. How did you find life once outside of the house?

Life is completely surreal. You go in as a regular person, you can walk around the streets and nobody will even blink, but as soon as you're back out, people know your name, stare, and suddenly have opinions on you and your personal business (although I can hardly call it personal business, if you're living it in the Big Brother house!) Suddenly, doors open and opportunities come your way - you just cant take it for granted though, as it can all end as quickly as it began.

4. As a fashionista what are your must have items in your wardrobe?

My absolute staple is a black leather biker jacket. Second that with a pair of black skinny jeans and some ankle boots. This is pretty much my uniform. Cuff bracelets are my new obsession, as well as huge designer bags - my newest addition is my black patent Gucci Hysteria bag. It had me at 'Hello'.

5. What are you top tips for looking fabulous?

tip 1. Something I learnt from having my makeup done professionally so many times is, you can never underestimate the power of fake eyelashes. Get someone to teach you to apply them if you dont know how.

tip 2. The easiest way to lose 5kg is to slap on some fake tan and wear a pair of killer heels.

tip 3. Dont wear something just because its in fashion! If harem pants make you look like a baby elephant, take them off NOW.

tip 4. Dont be afraid of going up a size. Yes, you might be a standard size 10, but if a 12 sits better on you, go with it. I know some girls who love an outfit, but wont buy it if the tag doesnt say the size they want it to. I've got clothing in my wardrobe that ranges from a size 6 to a size 12! If it looks good, it looks good. End of story.

6. What do you think is the key to being a fashionista?

Trusting your own fashion sense is the key to being a true fashionista.. If stylists like Rachel Zoe didnt take fashion risks, then you wouldnt even know their name. Find a few influences you can relate to and try to channel a little of them every day. I love that whole glamourous 60's/70's jetsetting glamour look. Marianne Faithful, Anita Pallenberg, Bianca Jagga and Brigitte Bardot - these were the women who inpsired others way back then, and then in turn we try to re-create their style now. The funny thing is that we think people like Kate Moss are so individual with their fashion tastes, however all it takes is one click on google to see her influences are all of the above!

7. What do you love about fashion?

I love that I can be a different girl every day. If I'm wearing a fitted suit jacket with a cuff bracelet and some leggings, I'm channelling my inner Lindsay Lohan. Or the next day I'll be rocking out a little Rachel Zoe look with messy bed hair and a fabulous vintage maxi dress. The way I'm dressed really does reflect how I feel about myself that day.

8. Since BB you've done a bit of modelling, how have you found that experience and what would be your ultimate goal in that world?

I must say, I enjoy the end result of modelling more than the actual process. Being heavily made up and posing in uncomfortable positions is sometimes tiring, but then the reward comes from seeing that amazing snapshot - and you know its all worth it. My ultimate goal is to still stay current in the industry, but perhaps from more of a 'behind the scenes' role, whether it be styling or working as a fashion commentator in the media. After writing an advice column for 2 years, I'd like to get back into my writing again, hence my new role at AskBronny!

9. What is the difference do you think between say a bikini photo shoot compared to a fashion shoot?

Lets face it, a bikini shoot is often not really about the actual swimsuit itself, but more about the body thats inside it, whereas a fashion shoot is truly to show off the designers piece. To be honest, I feel more comfortable in a fashion shoot because it allows more freedom of expression, to be more artistic, rather than wearing a tiny piece of cloth and a smile. Dont get me wrong, I love doing bikini shoots, but my heart really does lie with fashion. After all, I was always the little girl who loved to play dress-ups and I never really grew out of that.

10. And finally, tell us what you'll be blogging about for AskBronny!

I'll be commenting on what I love and what I dont. Reading my blogs, I want you to feel like I'm your best mate and actually just sitting in your living room chatting away. I'll tell you why something works for me, or why it doesnt. None of the fluffy stuff, just true honesty.
