As we get ready to say hello to the new decade we say goodbye to 2009 and take a look at the hottest looks of the year!
Trends come and go - and come right round’ again, but who would have thought 2009 would be quite so fun, flirty and totally sexy! We reminisced on the looks that stole our hearts – and loosed our wallets, and pulled together a list of this year’s hottest trends. 1.0 Maxi must-have What single piece of Summer item can you take from drinks with the girls, to the beach, and back to the office? Tres impossible? We think not. The ultimate piece in versatility is undoubtedly the maxi dress. Once again making a fashionable comeback this Summer, the maxi offers a plethora of different styles to choose from – halter, corset, one-sided, low cut, backless, criss-crossed – the list is endless and the list of prints even longer! Many of Tinseltown’s finest have been spotted in the frock including Nicole Richie, Rachel Zoe and Paris Hilton. Adorn with oversized, statement jewellery and embellished flats. 2.0 Tough it Up! The military jacket made a huge fashion statement this past Winter, and with the current global warfare going on, it couldn’t be more present. Designs were largely inspired by the Napoleon era of the French Revolution, with high stand collars, metal and gold buttons, and ornate trims. The best part of this look is you can wear it whether your style is rock chick, boho babe or femme fatale. For a rocker look, match with skinny jeans and sky high heels. Add a feminine touch by layering with lacy, flowy tops and flower printed tights – we swear it works! Carry on the boho phenomenon by incorporating fringed boots and patterned prints. 3.0 Immortal Leather When leather hit our shores, I couldn’t help but feel a little sceptic - apprehensive even. I mean sure maybe in New York or Paris… but could it ever work in Melbourne?! My reservations were quickly dissolved when I spotted a girl wearing wet-look leggings with a dusty pink oversized cardi and studded beige flats - totally ala Mary Kate. The key to donning leather is to make it look girly and not gothic. For a flirty take, team a floral dress with a cropped biker jacket and opaques. Check out Balmain’s Autumn/Winter 09 collection for inspiration. 4.0 Razzle Dazzle Em We absolutely heart bedazzled jackets that shine all night on the dance floor - certainly making them the life of the party! A new tricky trend that if worn incorrectly could see you hit No.1 on the fashion faux pas list. The trick to this look is to downplay the rest of your outfit and not try too hard. Wear with a plain singlet and minimal accessories to let the sparkles be the star attraction. Jessica Alba and Rachel Bilson were both spotted wearing one – making yet again another trend look utterly, utterly effortless. 5.0 Lux the Tux The tuxedo blazer left a bigger fashion footprint than even Christian Audigier. What mesmerised us the most upon its arrival, were the remarkable combinations it brought with it. Who would have thought a long man-style blazer over a party dress could look so unbelievably sexy? Or dressed down with a white Bonds singlet, distressed boyfriend jeans and casual ballet flats? This Summer has taken a lighter option, vying for a colourful blazer in coral and beige that works just as well with your LBD as it does with black leggings or high waisted shorts. Thank you Yves Saint Laurent. You have brought immeasurable happiness into our lives. 6.0 “My Petal” Flowers shot in full bloom across our radar this spring, unleashing our inner girliness with flirty florals and splashed brights. For a truly quirky and unique look, try mixing light floral pieces, such a mini shirt, with a textured short knit and the latest booties. With so much man-style going on in 09, were a little glad to see some ultra feminine mystique raise the bar. As we slowly melt into Summer, this season’s hottest bikini (and sun dress) is definitely in the floral print. Zimmerman, Seafolly and Camilla & Marc all do gorgeous floral printed cossies. 7.0 Dishevelled and Distressed Denim If you thought ripped denim would be left in the grunge era of the 90s – think again! This year ripped jeans and shorts have been revolutionised in an uber sexy way! Not to mention even more revealing than possibly ever before. This look is about appearing edgy and unkempt, so forget the cardigans and think tanks, oversized tops and vests. Add a fedora, Ray Bans and fancy flats to really exude carefree and au naturale. Unquestionably the Queen of ripped shorts is the daring Miss Kate Moss. When have we ever not looked to her for inspiration? 2009 certainly saw some exciting new trends such as the biker boot whilst keeping some of our favorites like leggings!
