Gloria's Favorite Things
Written by Gloria Calescu

1. Leggings

My black leggings are an everyday lifesaver. When I’m staring mindlessly into my exploding wardrobe – already 15 minutes late – the leggings save every time. They’re the best item to pull a quick and easy, yet gorgeous outfit together. I can honestly say I’ve worn out at least 10 pairs already in the past year!

2. Tiffany & Co. bracelet

This is possibly my most prized possession. My parents brought it for my 21st and it definitely gets favoured above all the rest in the jewellery box. I am a huge fan of the wonderful classic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s so I always feel particularly happy every time I wear it.

3. Pashmena

I brought this from a recent trip to Paris. It’s a beautiful salmon colour that seems to go with just about everything. It’s also 100% cashmere so it feels incredibly soft against your skin. I wore it on the entire flight back to Melbourne and felt oh so Parisian.

4. Nameplate necklace

My gold ‘Gloria’ necklace was another gift from a close friend. It has a small diamond on top of the letter G and I literally never, ever take it off. I often forget I’m even wearing it and gasp in surprise when strangers address me by my name. Duh Gloria!

5. Batiste dry shampoo

I wish I could meet whoever invented this because I want to give him/her a big kiss! From the first spray, my life changed forever. I keep a bottle in the bathroom, one at my work desk and a mini version in my handbag. As my hair’s quite thin, it tends to get oily quickly. With a few sprays of Batiste my hair becomes instantly refreshed. $40 blow wave? Fuggedaboutit!

6. Bardot bag

My Bardot bag is the newest piece to my expanding collection. It’s a fairly large, black cushion, chain tote that closely resembles the infamous Chanel bag (which one day I’ll be able to afford). But for now, this one’s perfect. It holds all my clutter that I insist on trudging along every day. I even throw my lunch for work in it.

7. Ballet flats

There’s a high chance I could have been a tottering ballerina in my past life as I constantly find myself steered towards a pair when completing an outfit. But honestly, can you blame me? I can’t think of any other shoe that’s so versatile. I wear them to work, when I’m shopping, out for coffee or dinner with friends. If I wasn’t 5ft 5 I’d even wear them clubbing.

8. Tulle Tutu

I spent months looking for a black tutu that wasn’t too ballerina-ish before I finally found one at Review – on sale too! It captures that extra bit of extravagance without looking completely ridiculous. Whenever I wear it out, I always get people oohing and ahhing over it.

9. Alannah Hill stockings

She is definitely one of my favourite Australian designers. I can rarely afford her pieces but her selection of stockings are reasonably priced. My black heart-patterned ones are so adorable. They really do make you feel so girly and romantic.

10. Pearls

I am absolutely head over heels about pearls. Somehow I manage to pull almost every outfit together and incorporate a string of pearls. I have them in white, black, peach, long, short, oversized, as a double strand, a single strand, and with pendants attached. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but for me, pearls win every time. So many inspirational women have adorned pearls and make it look amazing; Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel, Grace Kelly and Jackie O, to name a few.

"Money has nothing to do with being stylish. It's about being born with that inner eye and having the confidence to convey a sense of yourself outwardly. You can't buy that. It's genetic." Sarah Mower, Fashion Journalist
