Designer Review: LADY PETROVA
Written by Melynda Xyz
The Contessa brings us the next in her series of Designer Reviews, this time with the gorgeous fashion designer Petrova of LADY PETROVA. We can't help but everything about her.

Petrova Hammond

I met the gorgeous and bubbly Petrova Hammond by chance one night at the Theatre.   She was off to see the Ballet and I was off to an MTC production. The first thing I noticed about her were her shoes and, being a shoe lover from way back, naturally felt compelled to go over and tell her how great I thought they were. Not knowing that it was Petrova whom I was speaking to at the time, but instinctively knowing there was ‘something’ about her, I now find myself being given the opportunity to review her label LADY PETROVA. Talk about fate!

Like most little girls Petrova Hammond loved to play dress ups, but unlike other little girls she was fortunate enough to grow up with a fashion designer for a Father and a dress maker for a Mother. Is it any wonder then that this little girl has grown up to become the woman fashion designer that she is today? Although she still loves to play dress ups, now Petrova helps other girls play dress ups with her own designs.

Graduating with a distinction in Fashion Design from RMIT University in 2003, Petrova has never looked back. Not only was she inspired to create her own label in honour of her late Father’s label ‘Lord Kim’, but since 2006 has also been running her own boutique, now called LADY PETROVA,where she showcases the best in local fashion design as well as her own unique creations.

Petrova’s talent and originality were recognised in the first Australian Season of the televised design competition Project Runway, broadcast in 2008 on Arena TV. After a gruelling selection process and 5 weeks of sweat, tears and determination Petrova finished up in third place.  Not a bad effort for a little known Aussie girl who was just making a name for herself in the competitive fashion industry. And not only was Petrova a popular favourite on the program, but her designs were described by host Kristy Hinze as “Beautiful, bright and breathtaking; a very distinctive style that makes you stand out from the crowd.” Now she has fans from all over the world, including an ‘I love Petrova Hammond from Project Runway’ fan page on Facebook!

So what about her label LADY PETROVA and the designs that make it come alive? While Petrova describes her designs as “Fun and colourful party dresses”, they are more than just that. Not only are her dresses and skirts elegant and feminine, but they are given the utmost attention to detail, with every frill, piece of tulle and tat of lace hand dyed or sewn on to perfection. But wait, there’s more! They are also reversible – giving you double the joy for your money. And what better way to experiment with your wardrobe, develop an individual sense of style and build fashion confidence than with a unique piece of LADY PETROVA clothing.

Oh yes and one more thing. All of her designs are made right here in Melbourne, instead of being mass produced in a sweatshop in China, which should give you some peace of mind when you hand over your hard earned money for that gorgeous white lace dress, Cross my Heart midriff dress, or Heather Dress (Inspired by the 80’s film ‘Heathers’).

So whether you are 12 or 60 get your pretty little self down to LADY PETROVA and meet this bright Angel of fashion. She is available to sign autographs, pose for photos, advise you with her styling tips or just make your day with her warm personality and radiant smile.

"Money has nothing to do with being stylish. It's about being born with that inner eye and having the confidence to convey a sense of yourself outwardly. You can't buy that. It's genetic." Sarah Mower, Fashion Journalist
