On a hot and sweaty Melbourne night Bronny headed off to see just what these swap your clothes fashion events were all about. It was a humid, sweaty, boiling hot and quite typical Melbourne Summer’s night that greeted around 60 of Melbourne’s keenest eco fashionistas at Bella Union Bar in Carlton for the Slow Fashion event. Girls held items in their sweaty hands to be swapped for what they might consider a bargain! I myself turned up with the maximum allowed – 6 items including 3 dresses, 2 jeans and 1 pair of shoes. I considered what I had brought to be quite a bit of loot to some unsuspecting fashionista, but as I trawled the racks pre show (lucky me to get a glimpse beforehand) I couldn’t help but wonder if it was all a bit of tat. I needn’t have worried however when I spotted a glorious brown leather bomber jacket and decided it just had to be mine! As we were given the rules by our glamorous host in what had to be the cutest red shorts that she told me later she made herself (the talent!) the volunteers wheeled out racks of clothes. There were jeans, dresses, shirts, shorts, belts, shoes, handbags, poncho’s, tshirts and more! I quickly looked for the rack holding the gem of a brown bomber and to my disappointment could not see it anywhere! The girls stood off to one side waiting for their chance to run hell for leather to the rack that took their fancy and then as they say in racing ‘we were off’. I quickly took my place at the rack where the brown leather bomber had been only to be completely let down, the bomber was GONE! How could it be that it went so quickly! But that’s the nature of this kind of event girls, you cruise you lose. I suggest if you see something pre convergence that you like – then stand NEXT to that item with hand outstretched and ready to grab BEFORE ‘GO’ is shouted! What could have proven confusing was that there didn’t seem to be an official ‘go’ or if there was I didn’t hear it. At any rate, I decided nobody was going to pick what I would like anyway (other than the bomber) as we surely all had quite different taste. I took my time and gradually picked up what I considered to be a couple of gems. My first find was a dark grey, figure hugging, pinstriped Alannah Hill blazer - "who could possibly be giving this little piece of gold away" I wondered in this upcoming season of the blazer "that will go nicely with my skinnies, a rock t and sky high heels this Winter" I decided. Next was a lime green spotted Valleygirl shirt rocking a French feel, not a bad pickup. Finally I wandered to the TShirts and to my joy and pleasure picked up two that I knew I could work with – a black Wayne Cooper and white TBar, both with that pre loved 'I couldn’t have worn it in better' feel. As I surveyed the remains of the racks and watched the girls in the changerooms trying on clothes whilst turning this way and that, I decided the only thing for it was to try and find a couple of eBay bargains. Back to the racks I went and this time looked for only designer. Happily I walked away with a couple of Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana TShirts that nobody in their right mind would wear unless they were complete label whores. Stepping back, I surveyed the racks of clothes left behind and felt almost sad at these once loved clothes, now hanging with no home to go to and be loved. No lovely owner to feel good by simply wearing them. I looked in vein for my own clothes and felt quite pleased to not see them, I hoped some lovely gal had grabbed them, loved them and taken them home to enjoy. For these clothes that didn’t quite make the ‘swap’ grade, their next stop is the opshop for recycling where I am sure some worthy recipient will think ‘that’s the hottest dress I’ve seen today’. Leaving the venue I thought of my purchases and wondered - could I do it – could I wear a label whore T and rock it as a new look with blazer, tailored shorts and heels? Afterall, I'm a stylist, surely I could get away with it! Hmmm… maybe – for the answer to that girls – you’re going to have to watch this space. For anyone who is interested in recycling clothes or being friendly to our environment through fashion I can highly recommend one of these types of events. It was fun, if a little sweaty and for those quick enough to nab an item – it certainly would have proved worth the trade of your old threads. For more information visit Slow Fashion. |
