Grammy Awards 2010
Written by Gloria Calescu

Another event in Hollywood means another chance for Tinseletown to get all glammed up, which subsequently means a critique on the style front from us.

This year’s 52ndAnnual Grammy Awards presented some memorable moments as well as some truly unique and whacky fashion. Even Out of Space Barbie made an appearance! Well not really, it was actually Lady Gaga, once again making an out of this world fashion choice. Only the biggest and the best names in music were seen on the night, including Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Rihanna, Jay-Z and many more. Here are some of the superstars that managed to hit an outstanding high note on the red carpet.

1. LADY GAGA

Whether Lady Gaga set out to shock, impress, make an unforgettable statement or simply remind us of who she was – she certainly achieved them all! Stepping out of her convertible and onto the red carpet, she had some much-needed assistance in getting that gyroscopic, piece-of-art dress and scathingly high McQueen-inspired shoes out the door. The celestial, custom-made Giorgio Armani prive dress was created in collaboration with Gaga, who completed the look with a unique star accessory, which she handled with the utmost caution. Call it OTT… call her a kook, but ultimately, she isLady Gaga and she knows how to get attention every time! After all, the Grammy’s is all about performing arts and individual expression, especially on the red carpet.

2. BEYONCE

Beyonce always hits the mark when it comes to looking breathtaking and as usual she did not disappoint. The nude Stephane Rolland gown hugged her bootylicious figure and curves in all the right places. Adorned with a ribbed pattern and zipped neckline that showed off just the right amount of cleavage (take note Mariah!), there was almost a tulip silhouette to the finish – which she can happily accredit her statuesque figure to.

3. KATY PERRY

This dramatic flesh coloured Zac Posen gown with scattered gold floral sequins fitted Ms Perry to a tea. To finish off her delightfully quirky look, she arrived clutching a Maharaja Elephant Minaudier – which we found also comes in a pig, cat and parrot version. As they say, only in Hollywood! There was something slightly reminiscent of Cleopatra here, perhaps it’s her dark locks against a paler skin and scatters of gold that brings the Egyptian Queen to mind. Apparently still inspired from her recent trip to India, she appeared with an unusual accessory - a gold bindi on her forehead.

4. JENNIFER HUDSON

Seeing images of Hudson in this dark Victoria Beckham peplum dress hit me with a strong case of déjà vu. The former Posh Spice had worn it before – naturally – as it was from her own line, but we’ve also seen it paraded by Blake Lively. A beautiful choice, Hudson too wore it with effortless grace, showing off her womanly figure and new bangs, which subtly complimented the geometric look of the dress. Loving that the avant-garde look is classic yet modern. Flirty yet demure. Appropriate yet slightly suggestive. Extra points for the fearless choice in those sky high YSL platforms.

5. KERI HILSON

Okay so this wasn’t entirely something new, but Hilson just looked so darn incredible in this dusty pink Dolce & Gabbana mermaid gown with a crystal-encrusted waist. Everything from the caramel-hues in her hair, to her golden skin tone, to the soft pink of the dress worked sensationally in achieving this drop dead gorgeous look. Wearing some serious bling, she opted for diamond studs and a diamond cluster cocktail ring both by Neil Lane.

The Grammy’s are seen as an occasion where songsters and songstresses can arrive in outrageously flamboyant, fashionably ridiculous even, attire. And although we can understand Gaga’s kookiness, or Imogen Heap’s attempt to channel Lady Gaga with that studded belt-like prop around her neck, there was one person we cannot help but shake our heads and tut-tut at. People have nominated her for Worst Dressed and unsurprisingly, she took home the title. That person is Britney Spears. Wearing Dolce & Gabbana does not equal instant fabulousness. The see-through black lace dress worn over a black bodysuit and paired with fishnet stockings was a complete train wreck. Really, what was she thinking?
