Golden Globes Awards 2010
Written by Gloria Calescu

We’re in Hollywood! Well, at least in spirit we are. The 67th Annual Golden Globes awards presented a showcase of Hollywood stars, many eager to take home a coveted award for their year’s hard work.

This year, the Globes was literally a dripping star-soaked event featuring some of the biggest names in the biz, including Amy Adams, Gerard Butler, Nicole Kidman, Cher, Tina Fey, Drew Barrymore, Penelope Cruz, Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Garner, Julia Roberts, Chace Crawford – believe us, the list is endless!

And so it goes with any red carpet event, there must be the fashion hails and fashion fails! Generally one to shock rather than make a begrudged fashion statement, Cher stuck to her usual semblance arriving in a floor-scraping black dress featuring a laced up neckline. Someone tweeted that all she was missing was a broomstick. Ouch!

The breast dress award undoubtedly goes to singing sensation Mariah Carey. She was practically bursting out of her Herve Leger by Max Azria hip hugging black dress with a V-neckline that left very little to the imagination. We love the bling though, which included diamond and platinum earrings by Chopard, and a stack of gorgeous diamond bracelets.

I almost laughed out loud when I heard someone mention that Tina Fey looked a lot like Mary Floppins. And after seeing her clutching an umbrella, I could certainly see the resemblance. The Zac Posen dress wasn’t necessarily heinous itself, albeit if worn on someone like Vanessa Hudgens for example. ‘I’m a little teapot, short and stout – but at least I’m wearing Louboutin’s!’

This year the event also presented a plethora of modern looks bursting with bright colours, ruffles, sequins, and Ariel-inspired mermaid tails. And as the celebs poured in so did the rain, prompting the umbrella to be this season’s newest accessory. Luckily the downpour didn’t put a damper on the sizzling stars and starlets who still managed to keep it glam all night long. Check out AskBronny’s top five looks for the evening.

1. KATE HUDSON

Always one to take bold chances, Kate Hudson looked every bit the white goddess in her silk Marchesa sculptured gown, and Casadei triple platform pumps which fashion commentators and critics have been raving about non-stop. The architectural bodice fitted with feathering pieces was one of the most eye-catching and visually intriguing pieces seen on the night. And her structured updo worked perfectly in letting the dress be the main attraction. Putting the final touches on, she kept the accessories to a minimum, working a pair of Stephan Russell diamond and pearl tassel earrings, and a cuff bracelet. The only thing we wonder is how she ever managed to sit down? Then again when you’re stirring that much attention, who really cares? Couture at its best!

2. DIANE KRUGER

Diane Kruger made a smart choice before attending the glorious Globes. And it was Christian Lacroix. The actress arrived – Joshua Jackson on arm - in a fuchsia, floor length, textural gown that complimented her classic old Hollywood look beautifully. I’m generally not one to advocate matching or colour coordinating, but in this instance, Kruger hit it spot on by carrying a white Muse clutch to parallel the dress’s side bow. And it was only natural she wore Chanel jewellery including multi-coloured stone earrings and a stunning diamond bracelet.

3. CAMERON DIAZ

Chris de Burgh would certainly have been swept away by this Hollywood lady in red. Holding her own umbrella – which subsequently even matched her ensemble – Cameron Diaz sashayed onto the red carpet in a gorgeous, almost bridesmaid-ish Alexander McQueen red gown and Salvadore Ferragamo black peep toe pumps. Never one to shy away from bright colours, Diaz worked this daring number with uncontested success and even ventured for classic red lips and toenails. The scooping neckline and structured shoulders alternated it from a wonderfully classic but at the same time completely modern look. We’re aghast at the idea that fashion commentators have been snubbing her ensemble, with many saying they disliked the shoulder pads. But I’d like to respectfully, yet fiercely disagree. A risk-taker and true fashion icon, she rarely makes a wrong move on the red carpet.

4. JENNIFER ANISTON

There was something slightly Hurlesque about this dress that made us think back to the infamous Versace outfit worn by Elizabeth Hurley in 1994. Donned “the safety pin dress” for its large gold pins holding up the sides, the same thigh high slit was apparent in Aniston’s similarly risqué gown. Clad in a black one-shoulder Valentino couture dress and Versace sandals that showed off her enviously toned and tanned legs, she sashayed in – Gerard Butler on arm – with exuberant confidence. And yes the conventional black dress may be at the very core of her comfort zone, but since she works it so flawlessly each time, we’re willing to let it slide. Who can say they pity her now after seeing her in this ensemble!

5. DREW BARYMORE

Drew Barrymore managed to stand out on the red carpet and luckily in an ultra gorgeous way! The shoulder and hip oceanic flora embellishments by Lorraine Schwartz were diamond studs affixed to her amazing cystal-scattered Atelier Versace gown. The glass fringe detail on her one-shoulder dress added a certain aura of exquisiteness and holding a gold Roger Vivier clutch, she looked like a golden globe herself. The statuesque actress managed to take home a Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV movie, and in our eyes, another one for her old Hollywood elegance.
