SAG Awards
Written by Gloria Calescu
On the flip side to the Golden Globes’ rainy ceremony, the annual SAG awards turned out to be a bright and sunny affair.

White and blue were the colours de jour, as were one-shoulder garbs and plunging backlines. Well if there’s one thing we’ve learnt, anything goes once you step onto that crimson velvet – although sometimes to the stars’ detriment. Here are our top fashionistas that rocked the red carpet and those who missed the mark completely.

The top looks we heart included:

1. KATE HUDSON

Once again AskBronny’s number one choice! The girl can do no wrong, it seems. Opting for white the second time round, Kate looked every bit the Pucci-mama in her floor-length, dramatically low, backless gown that she paired with a long Cartier white gold and diamond necklace. And seeing as her décolletage was out of sight for the night, she swung it backwards, letting it fall over her bare back for a unique and completely modern look.

2. DREW BARRYMORE

Is it a mini? Is it a maxi? Guess what, it’s both! Drew Barrymore looked absolutely sensational in a tiered royal blue Monique Lhuillier frock that did total justice to her creamy white skin. Her decision to step out in the strapless bustier with an asymmetric beaded peplum proves that she truly is a fearless fashionista (with a little help from her stylist friend). Her tousled and teased tresses were swept up into a messy updo, for a carefree, no-fuss finish.

3. DIANE KRUGER

Okay, we’re not recycling celebrities here, but what can we say, these gals all have truly unique styles and can’t seem to stop stepping out in anything short of fabulous! Had I not seen Diane in this Jason Wu mustard gown, I would have forever forgotten about the unconventional yellow hue! The long dress featured a glamorous train and an interesting asymmetric neckline, showing off her silhouetted curves beautifully. Add some ruby jewels and crimson lips, and you’ve got a classically romantic finish.

4. ANNA PAQUIN

Finally, I’m elated to see some-one ditch conventionalism and step out in a below-the-knee mini dress. The Oscar winner couldn’t have looked more youthful in this Avatar-inspired Alexander McQueen piece that featured a print resembling a peacock slash serpent slash cleverly morphed variation. Her Pierre Hardy shoes and gold clutch, also by Alexander McQueen, worked like magic to pull a totally fresh and edgy outfit together. Of course as it happens in the turbulent world of fashion, some did not take a liking to Paquin’s le robe of choice suggesting it would have been more suitable for the after party than the ceremony. Although her bouffant blonde hair and false eyelashes suggested a more nonchalant ease, she still managed to make a statement and turn heads. After all, isn’t that the real reason we find ourselves so enthralled by these events?

5. MARION COTILLARD

And another one bites the dust! Well in fashion lexicology, the short, white, feathery kind. Eschewing the flowing gown, the French actress opted for a one-shoulder, embellished mini from the Elie Saab Haute Couture line and matching white platforms. Perhaps stars are mistaking the matrimonial aisle for the red carpet, with white clearly being the coveted choice of the night. She finished her look with an unmistakable Chopard emerald ring and a 20s flapper side chignon. Classic.

And those we wished never were:

1. Paula Patton

Another star jumping on the white bandwagon. Unfortunately someone should have mentioned to Patton that layers and ruffles do not necessarily mesh especially when one is pregnant. Her strapless white tulle and organza J.Mendel gown was finished with an ivory overlay that could have only passed walking towards the altar. Just.

2. Patricia Arquette

This is what we envision went on inside Arquette’s head in between poses and walking down the red carpet. ‘Stand up straight, don’t even breathe, and thy seams shall stay in tact!’ Her scaly-green Riser Goodwyn gown was in every way shape and form simply wrong! Not only was the fit unflattering, but it showed off her curves in all the wrong places. Hopefully next time she’ll branch for a little more tasteful and a little less mermaid.

3.  Mariah Carey

Self-confessed diva, Mariah has always held her own when it comes to individual style. And whilst she looks absolutely gorgeous in golden-caramel curls and bronzed skin, perhaps its time for a new look. Her one-shoulder red dress was borderline okay, however it still appears she can’t help grabbing gowns that are too small for her voluptuous physique. I for one am a little tired of witnessing her precious assets so prominently displayed every single time.
