Lesson On Leg Lingo
Written by Gloria Calescu
Leggings, jeggings, treggings… We bet you didn’t know there could be oh so many different types of leg wear lingo did you? Well there’s a whole lot more to this season’s look than the humble black legging. With all these new fashion terms coming out onto the scene, it can be a bit confusing knowing the difference between these new ‘ings’, so here’s a bit of a quick lesson on the new style front.

LEGGINGS

It’s difficult to remember a time before leggings invaded our closets and took over as the ultimate piece du jour. Traditionally black and made from either lycra or cotton, they are generally ankle length however have been spotted cropped to the knee and in between.

As many girls have discovered by now, leggings are the easiest and most efficient way to pull a totally fabulous outfit together – whether it be rain or shine. In summer they’re great with babydoll or tunic tops for an everyday casual look. To brave those cold winter days, you can effortlessly team them with a comfy knit and over the knee boots.

JEGGINGS

Jeggings are unquestionably our latest covetable piece. After years of performing spectacular, yet nonetheless ridiculous little dances whilst tugging to get jeans on, there is finally an easier and more comfortable alternative.

Jeggings entered the market as a cross between leggings and jeans, exhibiting the typical look of jeans but the flexible feel of leggings. Genius! They are available in an assortment of shades and colours – just as jeans are and even have stitching, faux pockets and zips, and buttons to really throw people off track!

Dress them up with a blazer and this season’s hottest wedged boot or down with a draped top for a casual daytime look.

TREGGINGS

Although these have been on the fashion spotlight for a while now, there is still some uncertainty about what they are exactly. Treggings are the latest vice in the leggings department, deriving from – you guessed it – leggings and trousers. While thin leggings may be taking a back seat this winter, treggings are a thicker, more robust option for those wintry nights.

Visually, they appear to be trousers with the sleek and tailored fit of leggings. These are a great wear for work, in either black or grey, for those who prefer a fitted pant that is still appropriate for the office. Team with a tailored jacket and mary jane pumps for a totally classic, smart look.

The best thing about them is, unlike jeggings, they are a ‘wear with anything’ staple. Feel like wearing them with a slightly shorter, tighter top? Go right ahead. The ‘trouser’ part of them ensures you don’t encounter a camel toe situation – the number one horror when working this trend.

So whether you prefer the look of leggings but opt for the feel of pants or vice versa, these selections prove we’ve become exceptionally spoilt for choice! Choose at your heart's content. And if you’re feeling really brave, channel Mary Kate Olsen with faux leather and chunky tan heels.
