Statement shoulders
Written by Gloria Calescu

I blame Balmain. Or rather credit the Paris label for causing such a ruckus over this autumn’s most coveted trend – the statement shoulder. It all started with the 2009 emerald green Balmain minidress worn by Jennifer Connelly to the premiere of He’s just Not That Into You. Since then, throes of 80s-inspired shoulder pads have taken over dresses, tops, jackets and even sweaters.

Other designers such as Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen quickly followed suite, sending off their models - and audience down a Dynasty resurgence. Oh Joan Collins, how we have missed thee. Well, some of us have.

The ‘Peak’ season brings interesting new creations, new ideas, and whole new dimensions to the idea of power dressing. With the introduction and rise of boyfriend jeans, man watches, tuxedo jackets, military and brash tailoring, it was only a matter of time before shoulder pads entered the proverbial arena.

A tricky trend to pull off, this look is about dressing with your body shape strictly in mind. When choosing a statement shoulder, keep your proportions balanced without overwhelming your individual frame. Pear shaped frames and structured shoulders are a match made in heaven. So consider yourself exceptionally lucky if this is you. The shoulder peaks give you that extra width to your top torso whilst slimming your bottom half.

As I sadly discovered over the weekend, petite, big-busted girls – like myself – will have some difficulty in finding the right statement shoulder. Enclosed in the tiny Bardot dresser, staring back at me from the rectangular mirror was a vision I strenuously try to avoid seeing every single day. All the attention was vividly on my larger than life assets. Divert, divert, divert!

What I did discover were a few tricks to giving off a more subtle illusion and alleviating attention away from the bust area, whilst staying on trend. Stray away from distinctively bold shoulders and definitely shoulder pads. Instead, opt for patched, ruffled, sequined or embellished adornments to give your shoulders that extra oomph without overwhelming your frame.

As for your bottom half, stick to thick opaques, leggings (jeggings or treggings) pencil skirts or slim cigarette pants during business hours. Finally, break out the sky-high heels for a completely fearless power statement.

So if you haven’t jumped on the androgynous boy-meets-girl bandwagon yet, then get on board. Because it all looks like it’s going to be pointingly bold this season!
