Socks Or Barefoot?
Written by Bronny
QUESTION

Hi Bronny,

I have been invited to a casual party at a home where the hosts ask for guests to remove their shoes. During the summer I like to wear loafers without socks, but I am not sure if that is the best thing to do. At an event where the hosts will ask guests to remove their shoes, is it better if I were to wear socks with my shoes so as not to have to go barefoot, or are bare feet acceptable in a situation like this one?
Thanks so much!

From Kenneth

ANSWER

Hi Kenneth,

I think this really depends on the situation. Is this a cultural thing like in Japan - where you would remove your shoes and have socks on underneath? Or is this a Summer thing where you take your shoes off and everyone is barefoot? Or is it a carpet thing - where you take your shoes off so as not to ruin the carpet!

I think the best way here is to wear socks and then decide what to do when you arrive. If you arrive and notice that your guests open the door with socks on - then you take your shoes off and leave your socks on.

If they open the door and are barefoot - then you take your shoes off and remove your socks and hey presto you are sorted!

Good luck – I’d love to know how this one works out.
