Black tie means tuxedo’s for men and gowns for women, in other words what you would see at the Oscars on the Red Carpet.  Formal on the other hand means black tie with some flexibility, men can play around with the Tuxedo look as can women with their attire.  Have a look at our Dress Code articles coming soon for further help in understanding the different types of dress codes that can be extremely confusing!
