Dear Bronny
Soon I will be entering the work force, as a teacher, and I need some advice on what clothes to wear! At this stage, I do not have a lot of money to splurge on a wardrobe and I wonder what basics I need to look good and feel great until I receive my first pay cheque? From Poor Student ANSWER Dear Poor Student Congratulations on completing your teaching studies! What an exciting time to be starting your career and entering the work force. Basics for your work wardrobe will include trousers, shirts, knits, flat and low heeled shoes and accessories. I would suggest that you have clothes that you are not even aware that you can adapt to a work wardrobe already. Trousers, shirts, shoes that you perhaps have worn out on special occassions to a restaurant or birthday with friends? These clothes will begin to form the basis of your work wardrobe. The first thing you need to decide is what kind of environment you are in and how do the other teachers dress? You can usually find out from your School Administrator or Principal as to what the code is for dressing. I would suggest that you save up to invest in one good suit for occasions when you will be meeting with parents or representing your school at functions. For everyday wear it will depend on the kind of activity that you will be doing with your class and as mentioned before the dress code of the school. Private schools tend to have a more corporate approach to dresscode, on the other hand public schools are a little bit more relaxed in the approach. If you are in a casual situation I would suggest that you gradually build on your wardrobe. Places like Cotton On, Target and Myer’s (shops in Australia) are a great place to start for low cost workwear. Cotton On in particular often do 2 tops for $30, I would invest a portion of each pay packet on building your wardrobe. As for shoes, you should have shoes already that you can adapt to your wardrobe. A great basis would be, black trousers, fun shoes (there are so many ballet, slip on shoes to choose from at the moment) topped with a white shirt and accessories that match with the colors in your shoes. This is just an example, but hopefully gives you an idea, you still look casual whilst bringing a classy edge to the look. For more advice have a read through our Guide To Workplace Fab article. Good luck for your first day and remember, dress to impress! You are what you wear! Love Bronny xxxx |
